Buyouts Reshaped D Horvat Re Signing New Coach

Created by: KPasty
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2023
Published: Jan. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buyout your twin boat anchors in Myers and OEL

Hopefully Tampa would be willing to part with Foote in a Schenn deal to save the draft picks and get Hoglander who could turn out to be a diamond in the rough for them.

Trade for Walker and sign Soucy to get some cheaper veteran D man who can play with Quinn and Foote. Then Bear with Walman who’s been good in Detroit would be a nice 3rd pairing. Not sure he gets to market but would be a nice option.

Monahan as a 3C

If he’s willing to coach again. Bring in a defensive minded guy like Barry Trotz. If he can get Ovue to play D there is hope for JT.

I just don’t really see the point. Is this team better? Still locked into the current group for a long time. Seems like this is just building for a long stretch of mediocrity.

I like the first trade for the Jets, I'm not sure what Nucks fans will say.

Why buyout Myers with a year left? Especially after trading Garland and cutting OEL? Foote deal is big overpay IMO. I'm not sure Walker is much of an upgrade.

I like the idea of Soucy vs OEL though.

This is fine because the cap crunch sucks so much that they are now stuck parting with good players to achieve cap space. I would like one of the RHD prospects or Heinola if we are dumping OEL but it's a good trade both ways IMO as is.

For me, I look at it like this. Their 9th in the league in goals but 3rd last in league goals against. They have the offence, they have a goalie albeit he’s been injured this year and they have a patch work over payed defence. Team defence is the issue. Rebuild the D core with cheaper more defensive players to reduce the goals against and open up cap space to re sign your captain, bring in a coach who is committed to defence first with his systems and the offence will still be there.

Cool. Good to know. You guys are in a bit of a rough patch right now and it sucks having to make bad deals due to cap mismanagement.

But it’s not like this team is an offensive juggernaut. So lets say you lift that team D up a bit and the offense stays similar. Maybe 9th in the league for goals for and 19th in the league for goals against rather than 30th. At best you’ve still probably got a bubble team.

Built for another five years of mediocrity.

Buying out Myers has such minimal savings would rather just keep him and try to flip him at the deadline.

The Kings aren't going to be trading away a quality defenseman at the deadline. Walker has been very good over the last few weeks. The Kings need him for the playoffs. If there's a LHD coming back the other way, that's a different story, but they're not moving a roster defenseman for futures.

At the draft, I can see the Kings moving Walker for a 2nd if they get an upgraded LHD. They're not sending back a 4th though, and certainly not pushing their pick back a year. Either change the 2nd going to LA to 2023, or change the 4th to a 5th going to Vancouver to 2024.

I would think you could persuade zona to take on
Myers for not a lot.

I would try to find a buyer for Boeser.

Get a better right side of the defense.
Get kapanen from Pittsburgh on the cheap
Get 1-2 physical wingers in FA / trades
See how much money you have left

Yeah buying out Myers is meh mine as well stick him on the farm more of a cap saving that way too (doesn't have to be our farm team) if no one will take him. I still think he'll fetch a pick after his signing bonus paid from Arizona.

OEL should be told to give a list or probably be bought out there are teams where he'd get to show his value (Florida/Washington) and we should be willing to eat up to half his remaining contract to get some Value on return. But if he says he'll only go to Boston then yeah buy him out and use the savings to get the defence we need not pigeon hole someone into a position he isn't suited for.
