While that could be true, Waddell stated before that he doesn't like trading 1st round picks for rentals. Sure, he could resign with us, but I'm sure contract talks wouldn't be until after the season is over.

Not to mention that the Canes won't dangle Morrow around like that, or KK. If the Nucks are wanting a young center and young D-man, then they could probably offer Drury and Coghlan with it.

This is not true - the comment is valid if talking about rentals. Shall we forget so quickly that on the same TDL the Canes made arguably the two biggest moves just a few years ago acquiring both Vincent Trocheck and Brady Skjei?

The Canes will spend money and resources for team controlled assets that fit the trajectory of the team.

I don’t think Horvat is actually likely mostly bc it sounds like he wants to test the market at this point so it’s doubtful he’d sign a reasonable extension. Plus he’s coming off of a career year with an unsustainable shooting %.

But a big splash could very much be coming - just one that fits how the canes do business.

Forgot to mention in my comment that the same trade deadline they did do a rental as well (Vatanen) to replace Dougie due to injury. The ‘Canes don’t do rentals’ trope is so overused - it’s only correct when the caveat of doing it while it makes sense for the team.
