Gonna be tough since that would mean Samuelsson gets paid 4+ mill to play bottom pair and they’d need 2 top 4 RDs instead of maybe 1

You would have to give up some actual value pieces for the Canes to consider moving Pesce, and that is not the case in your proposal. Maybe start with Quinn or Cozens if you want to even have a chance at acquiring Pesce.

A soon to be 29 year old Pesce as a rental does not get that even with extension. Too old to get a mega value young piece

For sure. I get that. I still feel like it is something they should be trying to do. And, considering all the top notch assets they have, it shouldn't be too difficult.

No thank you on the 5v5 liability Pat Kane has become. Let someone else overpay for PP points, tumbling possession numbers, and abhorrent defensive play.

He's said he's more comfortable on the right since he got drafted. Always played the right in Sweden.

I think it's a coincidence that he is breaking out at generally the same time he switched to the right side. He was about due for a breakout and having Samuelsson as a partner definitely doesn't hurt. But, if it works, it works. There are certain things, though, that are just inherently easier to do on your natural stick side.

The Canes have no reason to move Pesce whatsoever. That package doesn’t give them an incentive to do that either. Canes aren’t going to move Pesce during their cup window, so either you pay the piper to pry him out or you don’t get him. It’s that simple.

I doubt they’ll re-sign him tbh. Getting a place holder and more pieces for him in order to get to Morrow and Heimosalmi makes way more sense

Tampa used to run Sergachev third pair at even strength but then he got special team time and played his off side at the end of games. I expect something similar to happen in Buffalo.

Gee, where would they get a placeholder that does everything that Pesce does to the degree that he does it, and at the cheap cost that he does it for? Jokiharu is not that. The closest comparable might be Zub or Cernak, and their respective teams won’t be moving them. Morrow likely takes the 3RD role either next season or the year after, and Heimosalmi likely joins the roster a year after that. Like I said, this offer could be easily beat by many teams, and the Sabres would have to add quite a bit of value to incentivize the Canes to, in effect, reduce their chances at the cup. You don’t move a piece of your core, especially ones as crucial as Pesce are, for an underpayment, no matter their contract status. The Canes weren’t willing to move Pesce for Laine, Eichel, and Nylander, why would they move him for a first and a RHD downgrade?

Yeah. That's what @Chapee44 said too. I wasn't aware of that variable and definitely answers that question.

As a contending team, the Canes trading Pesce makes zero sense. He’s on too good a contract and plays too important a position. Unless they’re trading him for a direct replacement, makes no sense. makes more sense to hold onto him as an own-rental.

I tend to think they’ll end up re-signing one of Skjei or Pesce, with them more likely retaining Pesce as RD are tougher to find and Pesce doesn’t have the offensive game Skjei has. Pesce will likely be cheaper.

    This is a reasonable take.

Demanding cozens or Quinn is not (scroll up)
