hypothetical if pulju clears doesnt report gets bought out

Created by: leafs101

Description
I legit think Matthews' wing might be the best option out there for a Pulju resurgence. Matthews has excelled playing with two forecheck/grinder type players in the past (Hyman - Matthews - Brown/Kapanen in early days), and a distinct difference between Pulju-McDavid and Pulju-Matthews is that he doesn't have to be the finisher with Matthews and Bunting/Nylander, he just has to do what he does best - forecheck, get to the net, play strong defensively.

Now the leafs can afford to reunite the often-successful Nylander - Kerfoot duo on 3rd line, maybe go get a better C for them if possible and then you have 4th checking line.

I really like the fit between Puljujarvi and the Leafs, but I dislike the lack of play driving on that first line. I'd have Marner there over Bunting

He can't be bought out at this time of year. If he doesn't report he is suspended...without pay. The best the Leafs could do is trade for him at 50% retention.
Seems amazing to me that PJ can't secure anywhere in the Oiler lineup (for years) but somehow is good enough for first line duty for the Leafs

matthews is the play driver. This spreads the 3 best play drivers in Matthews, Marner, Nylander on three different lines. They all have proven their abilities to produce enough playing away from each other over the years. Matthews tucked 40 as a rookie, playing with rookie Hyman and rookie Brown - two forecheck, defence, not driving play players (at least at that time). Wouldn't be too worried.

Puljujarvi is a pending RFA after this year, So technically he can't be bought out. And if he were to fail to report he'd be suspended.

if he doesn't report I believe they can mutually agree to just void the contract (?) not sure though. Pulju does it to get another shot, edmonton does it to save money. Last sentence is misleading, a) he's been everywhere in Oilers lineup lines 1 - 4, b) sometimes players just need a change of scenary, situation, utilization, etc and c) he's on first line in attempt to regain some of his confidence and to spread the wealth of good players across 3 lines, he's the least important forward in that top 9 if he stepped in today but it's not all cut and dry line 1 is all best players

Why would the Leafs want Pool Party? He couldn't even produce playing with McDavid and Draisaitl.

Suggesting that poolparty had to be a goal scorer playing with McJesus is kinda comical considering McJ is leading the league with 41 and is on pace for 66… yup, McJ needs someone to score the goals

can't deny that McDavid always primarily looked for the pass option for many, many, many years. Was just so gross he'd get the goals too. Well known he's put more of an emphasis on shooting this season.

If Matthews is carrying the puck, he's still going to have to be able to finish. I think it would be best to start him off in a forechecking role, on the 3rd line (say they trade for him at 50%). Then gradually as he gains confidence they can try him on the second line with Tavares and Nylander.

He is shooting more this year, no one is denying that. But he always could have so he didn’t need a goal scorer. He just needed a player to do the grunt work in the corners, a player good enough to set him up. Hyman, Kane, Drais, RNH all fit the bill. JP doesn’t but he may fit with another team like TOR. I wouldn’t want him tbh
