They aren't going to retain on him. They want his contract off the books if possible so that they can activate Yamamoto. If they can't trade him, then they will waive him and another player.

“Elite” players don’t typically get waived. There has to be more to it.. maybe his defensive numbers are buffered by his line mates and not him. If he is a Selke candidate no chance they put him on waivers.

Hard to be an elite defensive forward when you aren't even used defensively, and based on his stats, it would probably go poorly if he were deployed in that manner.
