TOR Needs to Build Line 3

Created by: Cor
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 12, 2023
Published: Feb. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toronto's focus needs to be making the forward core deeper and thus, tougher to match-up against.

ANA/TOR - Frank Vatrano was someone the Leafs were interested in earlier this season, and someone the Ducks were looking to possibly move. In this deal, I envision the Ducks retaining on, and flipping Kerfoot elsewhere, and ending up with roughly 2 3rd's of value.

TOR/MTL - Monahan makes a lot of sense as a 3C target. MTL/TOR have a history of making deadline trades. Habs getting value out of a player they got paid a 1st to take is always a W.

Why would we be looking to move a UFA we had just signed to a multi year deal?

Fair enough offer but Monahan has to play a few games before anyone pays anything of value for him, if he comes back and plays like he did before the injury he'll be able to possibly fetch a better return

Bunting will stay on the first line because he's been great. It's silly to put an unproven player in the first line.

If he comes back healthy and plays like he did earlier this season, maybe we get a conditional 2nd + a pick or B prospect
The condition could be if they reach the SCF, the pick upgrades to a 1st ? That would be sick and I would be cheering for the Leafs (to lose in the SCF tho). I want that pick 😂

Beyond that.... the Vatrano contract isn't horrible and one the Ducks easily ride out. Also, Vatrano for Kerfoot is a pretty lateral move.

So unless the Verbeek thinks he completely botched that signing, it makes no sense at all.

No, I doubt that.

Monahan had certainly been looking much better as a Hab, but a 2nd is very good value for what he was doing. Steeves is a workhorse, who sees the game well..... guy competes nighty. Abramov is whatever.

Point is, I see this as an overpay actually. I can see a 2nd (provided Monahan comes back and does what he was doing). Beyond that, no.

Steeves I think makes the Leafs out of camp next season, two strong season with the Marlies and his work ethic has him there.

So yes...... overpay. Temper those expectations.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. No he is not.

Tarasenko landed a 1st. In what world does Monahan = Tarasenko? (Mikkola for me was the other pick)

Monahan was looking good, but when it is all said and done, not 1st rounder good. It was wishful thinking (I was thinking too). Now reality has set in.

Monahan, known in Calgary as a under performing playoff guy. Adding another non-physical guy is all the leafs need. NO deal.

I don't believe for a moment that Frank Vatrano was someone the Ducks were looking to move. And now that we've seen him, we're entirely satisfied with him. Trading him for a Dimitry Kulikov return would be horrible.

"Frank Vatrano.... someone the Ducks were looking to possibly move"

Nope, we never were, you're information is incorrect . Toronto media got into a fever dream about it a couple months back when it was mentioned on 32 thoughts that Vatrano is the kind of guy the Leafs needed.

He was our new GMa first UFA signing. You don't sign guys to multi year contracts and then immediately turn around and ship them out of town.

We decline.
