Leafs dont need Patrick Kane get Timo Meier with reasons

Created by: Brad_Treliving
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2023
Published: Feb. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs don't need another smaller forward on this team when they already play "small". Kane may be skilled but the way he handled himself regarding not getting traded to the Rangers just shows his immaturity as a player. Leafs don't need a complainer and whiner when he doesn't get his way. All things considered, he is Nick Folgino 2.0 with his injury history, if he is not 100% healthy, why throw assets?

Timo Meier is exactly what this team needs, a warrior on and off the ice. He is a guy you want to battle with and stick up for in a 7 game playoff series

I think we all want Meier on the Leafs, but don't see how we can outbid New Jersey or teams with better prospect pools. Kane might just be the next best option and cheaper to acquire

I would personally go after Sam Lafferty than Patrick Kane (and that says something). I would even rather stand pat than to acquire Kane, he isn't what we need

Leafs should get Kane and Meier, resign Kane for a discount and let Matthews and Kane rip it up

Kane has a clutch factor and playoff pedigree, he's come up big in a lot of big moments. So, for that reason, they could use him. Of course, the cost has to match the risk of him going out. Meier fits the bill in terms of player prototypes, but the cost could be super high. So something to consider is that they can still add size in different ways like getting Barbashev or signing Knies, and they get the impact from Kane. Now say if Kane does go down with injury, the Leafs have 4 impact forwards already. So, it's really about getting the best value for their assets. If the Kane ask is higher than Giroux's cost it's definitely not worth it, should be slightly lower though.

Fact is Meier could be too pricey, so they need to compare and contrast that. It's not as simple as saying Meier is a better fit, therefore we should get him over Kane.

Dubas is likely to do something like that whether it be Lafferty or McCabe or someone else.

The only way I see that happening, which I would hate would be if there is a 3-way trade between the Leafs, SJ, and a Meier suitor (eg, VGK), where Meier goes to the Leafs, Nylander to VGK, and the futures+roster player(S) from VGK to SJ. The Leafs then resign Meier 8-8.5mx8.

Then the Leafs acquire Kane+Lafferty or McCabe or Domi. Then they might resign Kane if there's mutual interest in the off-season to something like 5mx4. Bunting would probably get let go of if Kane is resigned, and the top 6 would look like:

Knies-Matthews-Kane
Meier-Tavares-Marner

If Kane isn't resigned (or he is and isn't any good), then it's probably a downgrade overall going from Nylander to Meier if the top 6 is (or a variation of:

Bunting- Matthews- Knies
Meier-Tavares-Marner

I 100% agree. Meier is the ideal target the leafs should be (and probably are) looking at. Definitely no to Kane.

IMO leafs should still keep willy, and try and move on from Rielly, then run a top 6 of
Kane-Matthews-Willy
Meier-Tavares-Marner

Find a cheaper 4-5M defenseman or trade for Mccabe

They shouldn't trade Nylander or Reilly (not that they can). You might be unimpressed about his play or his overall fit, but he does really matter in that locker room.

Just get Meier if you can for a reasonable price, if not then try to get Kane+someone for a reasonable price. I'm sure Dubas will explore all options

I can see a world where he turns into a beast, playing with Auston Matthews. I do believe having the chance to play with Auston and for a contender would give him that motivation

And? At least he has a good understanding of how to play defence. Kane certainly doesn't and with a bad hip, isn't good enough offensively to outscore his ridiculously bad defensive play.

McCabe-Lafferty-Raddysh would be a good pickup and only one team. Chychrun- Crouse - McBain would be another. Now the leafs would have to give up a fair bit for sure

What about McCabe-Lafferty-Raddysh or Chychrun-Crouse-McBain. Either trade would give the leafs some physical push in a long series.

I think Chychrun requires Knies, and the ask for Crouse will likely be hefty as well.

McCabe+Lafferty+Raddysh probably doesn't appeal to Dubas at all. He said they thought of adding to the back but think addressing the 2LW issue is more important. So, maybe a Kane+McCabe trade.

I think Soucy could still be on Dubas' radar if SEA chooses to move him. I heard they are looking to upgrade on Borgen, so maybe if Holl does fall out of favor for the next two weeks, could be a Soucy for Holl swap in a 2 for 2. That would just then leave for them to get the upgrades upfront. Not saying Soucy is an upgrade on Holl (I think people would argue both sides) but I think he brings the same things as Holl but more physical, not sure if he can play as much as Holl can but a lot of people do thing Holl is being overplayed in Toronto.
