I Have A Deadline Dream

Created by: IDKtbh
Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2023
Published: Feb. 21, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We have more forwards than we can play and we can’t afford to standpat at the deadline and miss out on multiple big ticket assets for “maybe” on the playoffs. I wouldn’t mind making the playoffs and one could argue we have an equal chance post deadline than we would pre deadline but either way, we’d get bounced in the first round.

Also, if we made the MIN deal soon enough, we could get a look at him for a handful of games and depending on where we are in the standings, we could move him if a team comes calling.
Trades
1.
DET
  1. Dumba, Matt
  2. Greenway, Jordan
  3. 2023 1st round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Wings get a boost on the backend, take a gamble with Greenway and net a 1st round pick out of the deal.

2023 1st is top 10 protected.
MIN
  1. Bertuzzi, Tyler
  2. Kubalik, Dominik ($1,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Guerin aggressively addresses the offensive woes while making future cost cutting moves before that $13m dead cap kicks in next year.
2.
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Would have preferred Walman back over Maatta but we can’t re-sign both with Edvinsson & Johanssen waiting in the wings.
LAK
  1. Sundqvist, Oskar ($1,375,000 retained)
  2. Walman, Jake
Additional Details:
LAK elects not to pay the cost which would be 3-4 times more than this for Jakob Chychrun and extends 4 year $14m contract to Walman while adding proven playoff depth to the middle six.

I admittedly don't watch much Detroit hockey, but I'm not sure what about that package warrants a 1st from LA.

The Kings already have 15 forwards vying for 12 spots, playing guys like Vilardi and Kaliyev on the "fourth" line. Middle six isn't a need. And I just don't know enough about Walman's play to say I want to give up a 1st for him when guys like McCabe could be gotten for a 2nd rounder and a B prospect (maybe).

So my gut reaction is no thanks from LA.

Just FYI, we can def sign both Walman and Matta. Chiarot can play the right side or happily be scratched

Wild probs don't do this. We could be interested in Kubalik.

Walman is a late bloomer who plays a very good complimentary game. Paired with Seider they consistently rank top 5 analytically among D pairings in the league. With that being said, a first is still an over valuation. He’ll prob resign anywhere from 2.5-3.5 on a mid term deal

Walman likely will not be traded and instead extended on a multi year deal.

After playing sparingly throughout his career, he has gotten the opportunity to play and shine in Detroit. He’s fast, has a cannon of a shot, He’s been quite good offensively on the rush and in the offensive zone as his metrics would prove and more than adaquate defensively.

He’s been playing on our top pair for almost a month and has statistically been one of the top defensemen in the league in that timespan. He might not get a 1st in a deal this year but I wouldn’t (and Yzerman wouldn’t) trade him for less than a first.

He will more than likely be extended at that contract I have the Kings signing him to.

Personally I think MIN makes out ahead in this deal, I strongly considered adding more coming back to DET but, I value/covet Dumba more than most. Obviously doesn’t seem desirable to move a 1st round pick but, with the soon coming cap issues pretty much restricting the Wild for the next 3 years, this will be the last time until 4 years from now that the Wild can make a splash like this. I think it’s a perfect deal for MIN.

The 1 thing this team can't do is score goals so moving kuby with Bert just exacerbates that problem. You get better defensive but if it's playoffs your aiming for with the minny deal it's not going to help.

If it was up to me, I’d trade everyone I have in here plus more and lose every game the rest of the year.

The last time in 4 years? Wha? They could make a huge splash two TDL’s from now since a majority of the $14.7M dead cap will be ending after that season.

I don’t think a 1st is on the table. Not this draft anyways. Minnesota needs a center and like half the 1st round is expected to be centers. If anything, Minnesota should be looking to add 1st round picks. Not trade them for rentals and short sighted gains

That LA trade is a lose-lose.
Minnesota trade has the most undesirable player in Dumba.

Plus Walman-Seider has been the 1st best line in the league for xGA (above 200 minutes from money puck). Trading him would be stupid.

Right now we’re in 2023 and you won’t really have cap flexibility until right before the 26-27 season. Which is 3.5 years from now.

2023-24 $12.5m
2024-25 $14.7m
2025-26 $14.7m
2026-27 $1.5m

You’ve got it a year later than it’s supposed to be.

22-23 $12.7M
23-24 $14.7M
24-25 $14.7M
25-26 $1.7M

If we accrue cap space in the 24-25 season, we can add a much higher cap hit around the 2025 TDL. Roughly 2 years from now.
