Matthews if he doesnt want to extend

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 17, 2023
Published: Mar. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Arizona has #1 overall pick and have Matthews and Bedard.

Arizona only does this if Matthews agrees to an 8 year extension with them.

Is this too much? Is Cooley a none starter?

Nylander extends 9.75m x 8 years.

Thoughts?

Cooley is a non starter for that fact that matthews could be a ufa and sign for free so why give up the young assets to aquire him. Could see schmaltz part of the deal but all other parts are up in the air

I get that you want to not lose him for nothing, but what's in it for ARZ to pay for him if he's only going to sign there? Might as well wait a year and not have to pay him while you racking up higher draft picks.

if arizona only does this if matthews resigns, then this offer is a joke

how is this offer a joke? Cooley is 3rd overall pick from this past draft.

guarantees that they get him. He could still go elsewhere in free agency. This would be Matthews guaranteed locked in for 9 years.

Fair enough on Cooley. I don't see Matthews being moved unless a high end centre prospect comes back. But who knows. I am playing a super what if game right now with this anyways haha

Still Arizona is probably the team he wants to go to and have the cap to pay him what he wants. This would mean that they have a better chance at signing him compared to other teams so why pay for him when you're the favorite in fa?

Because it's his hometown team and could get anything he wants from there. He could play with a young and up and coming team that striving for the playoffs without the media pressure of Toronto. Why do you think he's linked with Arizona in the first place? Lol

I am a Leafs fan. If you don't see Matthews signing in Arizona as a legit possibility, then you are delusional. Doesn't mean he will, but Arizona would be very high up on the potential list of teams he signs with.

Definitely - 3rd overall pick (centre), 1st round pick this draft, 2 x 2nd round picks (one being for sure in the low 30's overall) and a top 6 centre/winger signed for 3 more years on a decent contract and 6m in a cap space.

This would be a very nice package for Matthews if he were ever traded.

hes not linked with arizona at all actually thats the funny part, Id love to see actual proof he is besides people thinking it because thtas all it is. hes on a contending team in the biggest market and wants to win which toronto gives him a much better chance than arizona, who might not even be a team in 3 years lmao

AM could easily just say he's going straight to ARZ. It's not like many other teams have the cap to afford him unless they give up another star player with high salary, and they likely won't if they're trying to win.

Like McDavid, it's an almost impossible trade.

If they were to obtain Cooley…then they gotta go get Snuggerud. Best line in NCAA in years.

There is no way Matthews is traded for anyone but Bedard. I would rather just keep him another year and try to convince him to stay than take less than he's worth. Besides, he's going to resign. He loves the spotlight and there is no where brighter than TO.

I would be less surprised to see him, Marner and Willy all sign matching 10x8 deals with the goal of making a huge pitch to McDavid to come form a super team. And I don't think for a second that will ever happen. But I also just don't see Matthews leaving unless something crazy happens. Willy and Marner both want to stay and Matthews will too. This is what they are building as well.
