Pre Free Agency Karlsson Trade no Campbell

Created by: pavelski_tip_in
Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 26, 2023
Published: Mar. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Edited to reflect players actually in the Oilers organization (oops).

A trade proposal that checks the following boxes

1. Oilers keep Bouchard because you rarely got the top promising young player (see Meier trade).

2. $11M retention on Karlsson which is closer to the original quoted figure

3. No Campbell involved.

4. Sharks get 1st round pick + 2 prospects drafted in the first round

5. Yamamoto, Foegele, and Ceci balance the short run cap hit.

6. Lorentz and Gregor provide some forward depth. Maybe including Benning for a 3rd would help Oilers fill out their roster for cheaper.

But Oilers still need to sign 5-6 forwards + Bouchard (including RFAs and call ups) to complete the roster. This amount of retention would only leave about $6.5M to do so.

With this in mind, it's very unlikely a trade gets done without another corresponding Campbell trade.

How exactly do you trade Reid Schaefer when he isn’t in the Oilers organization?

The same way Buffalo drafted Taro Tsujimoto. Hope no one notices

Sharks reject both offers quite easily. And it isn't really close. Schaefer is a preds prospect by the way.

Broberg is not needed. We have recently signed and traded for multiple LHD in Mukhamadullin, Okhotiuk, Thrun and Pulli. There's simply no room for Broberg. Yeah this isn't the package bud.

Haha. Was wondering why he wasn't showing up. Fixed that glaring oversight.

The Sharks current LHD are Vlasic, Ferraro, Simek, and MacDonald. None should be with the team when we're good again including Ferraro. Of the LHD prospects you mentioned, maybe 2 make the NHL and only 1 sticks in a top 4. It's never bad to have more dart throws.

IF we trade Karlsson though we would all but need a RHD coming back, especially if benning is also part of the trade. Realistically we have vlassic and Ferraro locked up in NHL spots with Thrun, Knyzhov, Mukhamadulin, and Kniazev competing for the third spot. Poulliot and Cicek could be considered too. Pulli likely also gets a shot.

You're right we do need RHD in the pipeline, but Oilers probably hang up if Sharks ask for Bouchard. Ceci would step in for Benning, and the Sharks could plug the remaining gap with a UFA. Essentially the Sharks help the Oilers fit the Karlsson contract not by retaining more salary, but by trading NHL depth on cheap contracts.

I would be very skeptical of any of the Sharks players from the old regime. I don't think Grier has any qualm with just cutting guys loose from the DW era. Sadly that could mean Knyzhov is placed down in the pecking order or released. Kniazev is interesting but still has some obvious flaws in his game. I think Cicek and Poulliot were given their opportunity and will be passed soon by many of the other players you mentioned. No need to invest so much in players with limited upside.

The whole trade is unlikely anyway. Just trying to push back against the Bouchard/Campbell suggestions.

Simply bad analysis. Sorry but a spade is a spade

Sharks LHD:
Vlasic
Simek
Macdonald
Knyzhov
Muk
Okhotiuk
Thrun
Pulli
Kniazev
Cicek

After these trades Sharks RD:
Laroque 2 years away
Havelid 2 years away
Fisher 2-4 years away
Ceci I guess.

Yeah let's get another LHD. Right.

Nah. There are better options at cheaper cap hits available (Matheson, Provorov) and they can dump their bad money elsewhere. EK65 takes away all their cap flexibility as this ACGM shows. 6 million to sign 7-8 more players doesnt work. Sharks have no leverage here.

Way too much value going to San Jose. No way Edmonton accepts this.
