If Nashville decides to rebuild and deal Saros, it's going to be a massive bidding war. Massive. It's going to take much more than that. I think the Pens can be competitive, but it would be looking more like two firsts and Pickering.

If it's two 1sts and Pickering not worth it, considering we'll be rebuilding in probably 1-2 years anyways. Interested to see how Lindberg does, but our goalie of the future will probably come from draft

I disagree completely. 100% worth it. Saros makes this team an instant true contender.

We should not be dishing out two 1st round picks in one trade when our rebuild is one or two years away. This lineup has so many holes. One trade doesn't make us a contender and even if it did it would only be for one, maybe two years of contending if were lucky. It would take an offseason of multiple moves including retooling the D, upgrading the bottom 6, getting rid of multiple contracts, and getting reliable goaltending. It can be done with a good GM, but we aren't one move away.

If / when Nash decides to trade Soros, they will ask for the moon. They will likely get something close to this trade. An A prospect and a 1st will be what they likely receive. Teams always trade great players a year or two too late. The return will reflect that.

The Hextall hatred blows my mind.

Your team has been good for 20 years, you’ve picked in the first round like 3 times, your best prospect is a greeter at Walmart, and people are surprised that the team is faltering?

I definitely do, he's absolutely unreal. If it were the Maple Leafs for example, 100% I'm giving two 1sts and a prospect. But they're a goalie away from being a true cup contender. It will take more than that for us with how bad our defense is. If Crosby Malkin and Letang had 3-4 years left of contending I'd go for it. By time Saros is available (I'm assuming he won't be this offseason) we'll probably have a year tops left to contend. It's unknown whether we can even be a true contender next season. We'd have Saros for 1 year then rebuild.

This is a flawed Pens team, but their biggest issue is stopping goals. They're grossly out-shooting teams. They're not having any issues scoring. Some tweaking to the bottom six next year and upgrading to Saros makes this team VERY dangerous.

I don't completely disagree, but I think our defense needs a lot of work too. Whether the system or personnel. We just don't defend well enough, constantly activate, and guys are wide open in front of the net nonstop. Can't hold leads either. We need more speed and grit on the blue line. Not being able to keep leads or stop goals is both goaltending and defense. Jarry and Desmith have been bad, so has our defense. Crosby Malkin and Letang also are playing at a very high level, but over 35 you never know when they could drop off. I'm not saying don't go all in, but we need to be very very careful how we navigate this offseason.

I'm big on fancy stats, and while I don't disagree with some of what you say, there's some basics here at play.

- The defense has barely played healthy all year together.
- The defense has new faces and with the constant injuries, it's hard to gel. People forget how much Gonchar and Paul Martin struggled their first seasons with the Pens. Sometimes it takes a little time to acclimated and it's hard to do that with the injury bug.
- The Pens outshoot their opponents on the regular by large margins, but can score, so that tells you a basic fact that the goaltending is working.
- Goaltending is a big reason why those leads aren't secured.
- The bottom six weakness puts too much onus on the top-six.

If Jarry was healthy and could stay healthy, this team would be in a very different situation. When healthy, I still think Jarry is a top ten goalie, but we can't rely on that anymore. Saros is a top three or four goalie who doesn't have many healthy issues.

Even when healthy though I haven't liked what I've seen. I understand it might be hard for them to find chemistry with the injuries, but I still am not a fan of Hextall's moves that he made for the defense. Sullivan's system relies on speed and mobility for the D and to join the rush often. Petry and Rutta, while solid players, are not built for that type of system. They also aren't really difficult to play against and we have no net front presence. There's a lot of issues with this team and I'm sure some perpetuate the others. But I still think that we either need more mobility on the blue line or Sullivan needs to change his system. Or my favorite approach is a combination of both. Would love someone like Gostisbhere or Orlov to help mobility/transition game and also a guy who can help defend in front of the net. I think if we can get one of each type of those players for the D, fix the bottom 6 (buyout Granlund and upgrade 3rd line) and improve goaltending we'll have a shot at the cup next year, not a great one, but certainly better than this year.

Shot counts can be pretty deceiving - when they're just lobbing wrist shots from 60 feet or shooting directly at the goalies logo. And for what it's worth they aren't really grossly out shooting teams - they're middle of the pack in shot differential. And they're 16th in goals for - so there's clearly some issues scoring. They actually rank higher in save % than goals per game - so it's hard to say stopping goals is their biggest issue and that they have no problem scoring.
