I don't completely disagree, but I think our defense needs a lot of work too. Whether the system or personnel. We just don't defend well enough, constantly activate, and guys are wide open in front of the net nonstop. Can't hold leads either. We need more speed and grit on the blue line. Not being able to keep leads or stop goals is both goaltending and defense. Jarry and Desmith have been bad, so has our defense. Crosby Malkin and Letang also are playing at a very high level, but over 35 you never know when they could drop off. I'm not saying don't go all in, but we need to be very very careful how we navigate this offseason.
I'm big on fancy stats, and while I don't disagree with some of what you say, there's some basics here at play.
- The defense has barely played healthy all year together.
- The defense has new faces and with the constant injuries, it's hard to gel. People forget how much Gonchar and Paul Martin struggled their first seasons with the Pens. Sometimes it takes a little time to acclimated and it's hard to do that with the injury bug.
- The Pens outshoot their opponents on the regular by large margins, but can score, so that tells you a basic fact that the goaltending is working.
- Goaltending is a big reason why those leads aren't secured.
- The bottom six weakness puts too much onus on the top-six.
If Jarry was healthy and could stay healthy, this team would be in a very different situation. When healthy, I still think Jarry is a top ten goalie, but we can't rely on that anymore. Saros is a top three or four goalie who doesn't have many healthy issues.
