Girard is 24 years old. How is he not the future?
Because a team that rebuilds isn't looking for a player whose contract nears expiry when the team's window reopens.
Girard is a solid player. But a deal with a blueline rich Jets teams IS NOT A FIT.
I will site the Chychurn deal to Ottawa. 2 years ago, this is a deal the Sens do not make. The rebuild was still on. Stützle was in his sophomore season, and the Sens needed to see what he would be (and he is something), Batherson was just becoming relevant, Norris entered his rookie season, Zub rookie season, Tkachuk was still figuring out his game. To many unknowns to entertain moving asset for a young defender.
Fast forward, where Stützle looks like he could be a 100 point centre, Batherson may have one of the best contracts in the league, Norris looks like he could be a PPG centre, Zub is sex on a stick, Sanderson is now added.... Chychurn moves the needle big time.
I can employ the same thinking to the Meier deal to New Jersey as well.
Girard to the Jets does NONE OF THIS for Winnipeg.
Girard to the Ducks may have some merit (although I would say that maybe a year early). Girard to Buffalo absolutely has legs (Sabres are exactly where the Sens are). Even Girard to Detroit may have some merit, looking at where the Wings are.
But the Jets?
Accept this isn't a fit and try again.
