Quite a bit. Neither player does anything for the Jets and Winnipeg is giving up the two best players.

Steve Yzerman is a fantastic G.M, but for the life of me I don't understand why he gave that contract to Chairot, who is nothing more than a 6th defenseman on a mediocre team, and a 7th defenseman on a contender. I don't think I'm the only Jets fan who is completely disinterested in a Chairot reunion.

The other contract in that trade was questionable as well at the time. I hated it when he got signed.

Take out Chariot and the Jets might be interested just for cap space. Doubt if the Jets are on M NTC Chariot's trade list

Wheeler is 36 years old, Detroit has 0 interest in him. Winnipeg needs RD like Detroit. Pretty sure they've no interest in Ben Chiarot.

I'm not shocked honestly. Yzerman has a sort of old school approach to his team building and a big dude like Chairot falls right in line with his signings. How he didn't see what was coming is puzzling though.

I'd have been happier with a 2 year deal at 6.5. He's fine this year and next, it's the other 2 years that suck.

Chiarot was signed because the Red Wings were lacking size and toughness on defense. Too many fans only look at offensive numbers when judging players. Chiarot does many things which won't show up on a scoresheet.

He brings an element of nastiness and is hard to play against. That's why teams value him much more than the casual hockey fan does. It's why Florida overpaid for Chiarot at the trade deadline.

Chiarot certainly has his warts and yes, Stevie paid too much for him. But that's UFA. You give up no assets but pay too much. Detroit isn't a prime destination for UFAs right now. We are still a team way under the salary cap. So who cares if we overpay?

This changes when Seider and Raymond's contracts are up. But even then we'll have contracts dropping off so we'll still have plenty of cap space. Chiarot provides good leadership to the young players. He's a team first guy.

I don't just look at a player's contract when judging players. Is Chiarot overpaid? Sure he is. But he helps the Red Wings and doesn't hurt us at all.

It's unfortunate he didn't mesh playing with Seider but that's ok. Some players just don't fit styles wise. The more the Red Wings improve the more valuable Chiarot will become. He's a bridge player for us.

We won't become what we want to be over night and Yzerman knows this. He needs guys like Chiarot and Perron to be leaders right now and that's exactly what they're doing.

Larkin can't do it all by himself.

Is Wheeler the oldest player in the NHL right now?

You can find that physical element in someone who isn't a turnover machine who doesn't routinely miss his assignments. He was insulated when he was paired with Byfuglien, and then Weber, but unless he has someone who carries him he's not very good.

Horrible take

he's not wrong. Chiarot sucks.

if you can limit the matchups he faces then he might have a more positive defensive impact as you know, a defensive dman?
but for the money he's making vs what he's worth, you better be counting your lucky stars Detroit isn't in cap hell

Another horrible take. This is another example of hating a player because he no longer plays for your team. So predictable. Detroit isn't even close to being in cap hell. It's also another example of NHL GM's valuing a player more than the wannabe geniuses on CFACGM.
