The isles. 32 YO panarin isn’t worth that much.

Even assuming Panarin would be willing to waive to the Isles, there is no chance that the Isles pay that.

Isles say no. To justify that return, NYR would probably have to eat an uncomfortable amount of his salary.

If they just want to move out the back end of his contract, there won’t be much of a return.

If I'm NYR, I'm targeting Dufour over Wahlstrom. But yeah NYR will probably have to eat some of Panarin's contract (say make it so he only is a 9m cap hit, roughly 2.6m retention)

Isles would pass on this pretty easily, I think.

They just don't have the cap. Rangers would 100% have to take back Josh Bailey(at least) *and* retain significantly more to make this work. Getting Panarin's age-32 through -34 seasons at $10M AAV is going to make it incredibly hard to extend Ilya Sorokin (barring a big jump in the cap) - as it stands right now, if you add Panarin at $10M to the Isles, they'd have only $14.85M in cap space going into summer 2024 with only 9 forwards and 4 defensemen under contract.

So the pass comes more from the cap logistics issues than on the quality of the player. I'd rather stick it out with Wahlstrom and whatever we can get out of those picks, even if it means passing up a perennial 90 point guy like the Breadman.
