Keep the defense mostly intact and add young talent

Description
Let me know on trades. Tough to value young and somewhat unproven players without having a really good idea about how the organization views the player and their importance to the team's future, but I took a stab.

Nashville Trade: I feel like Livingstone makes Foote expendable for the Preds, but maybe they trade Barrie and/or Fabbro instead. I'm really not sure what direction they go, but having another Foote in Colorado sounds kinda cool, and the Avs have a spot for him.

Washington Trade: I have even less of an idea about McMichael in Washington, but it seems as though he's fallen out of favor a bit. Positionally and stylistically, I like this for the Avs. But I'm not sure if it makes sense for Washington. Olausson is arguably Colorado's top prospect, so I'm giving up what the Avs feel would be a good piece. He's also a couple years younger than McMichael, which may be better for the timeline. That said, I understand if the Caps would rather stick with McMichael.

McMichael is probably a huge part of the team starting this year and if he isn't he'll be packaged for a top 6 player, so doubt Caps do this.

I think they give McMichael one more year before Washington considers trading him. I'm unsure about Foote, I would lean more towards them trading Barrie since it seems Nashville is going through a bit of a retool, and it doesn't hurt to keep a young defenseman.

I think nashville doesnt plan on keeping barrie long term so that opens up a spot for livingstone and they keep foote on 7th dman but who knows. I havent been impressed by foote so im very open to trading him

You're on the right track with the value. I just think the Caps are still pretty high on Mikey, and his time in the minors this year seemed to really help him. He's probably got an opening night spot that's his to lose

Thanks. Maybe I'll revisit mid-next season. It makes a lot of sense for the Caps to give it one more go next year, so I'm not too surprised by the responses.

Well that's a nice deal for Newhook. The 5m 3rd pairing guy is a tough look

Yeah it might have to be a one year deal for Newhook to get that AAV. But i went with two because why not.

Girard is still top 4. He'll average over 20 min per night like he always does, regardless of how it looks on paper. Really Manson is the guy who arguably makes too much for his role.

Yeah I like Girard at that price too but if he's your 3rd pairing guy then he's over qualified/overpayed for that role

The Avs simply don't run their D that way which is what a lot of peope don't seem to 'get'. so even while Girard appears third pairing in the traditional sense on paper he's a 20+ minute per night guy. Those aren't third pair minutes.

Values are probably pretty fair. I'd say NAS accepts but WAS declines. As others have said on here, WAS seems pretty high still on McM.

Even if Mikey does well this year, depending on if Oshie/Backstrom are back and depending on how much Sandin+Wilson will cost, I think this is a very reasonable trade to expect next year, since I would be concerned on Washington's end that they won't have enough money to bring back a progressing McMichael + Sandin and Wilson. I think you've done a pretty great job on the valuing here.
