Adding to the young core

Created by: LeonardoNoCardio
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 30, 2023
Published: Apr. 30, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Would Devils even consider trading Holtz? I have no idea, but he's exactly the type a prospect Wings need. Kirby Dach was traded for pick No. 13 and No. 66. Dach plays center as well, So I think Holtz value is slightly less.

Trading for a young player like Holtz is riskier than trading for a proven player like Debrincat. But there are also positives about that: Holtz is 4 years younger and would fit well in with the young core: Edvinsson, Seider, Kasper, Raymond, Cossa...etc. Holtz is also still on his ELC for 2 more years- that gives us a lot of Cap flexibility instead of signing Debrincat for 8+million.

That's an interesting idea. Not sure either team does it. Raymond and Holtz were dynamite for the Swedes. I'd probably do it but change my mind. LOL

New Jersey probably takes that. When was the last time we saw a prospect with zero NHL experience get traded for a 1st and a 2nd?

What happened to Holtz? His stats ain't look too good. Any Devils' fan with insight on why? Get depthed out and bad coaching in AHL? Not put in good situations? Just looking bad? If it's the last thing, I would rather keep the picks tbh.

I think the Devils give Holtz one more shot before they trade him for picks. As things currently stand this would have to be a draft day trade for someone we really wanted that fell to 18th, and that doesn't seem likely to me.

I mean good prospects do get traded (Looking at you Florida, took the Levi L)

He torched the AHL last year, but got mismanaged by Ruff this season and was injured immediately after getting sent back down for good. I know there's a lot of hate for him but he's the same player who was point per game in the AHL at 19. He has top six sniper/playmaker upside and there's no reason to believe he's not an NHLer.

Ah so mismanagement. We know a lot about that here (Ben Simon, former GRG coach). If he shows form (which I don't doubt he won't) and NJD would be into this (I don't think they would; they'd probably prefer an NHL ready prospect, even if depth), I'd be happy with this.

As part of bigger trades for established players, yes. Not in a separate trade for picks. The only one I can think of is Adam Fox for two 2nds, but that was because he refused to sign with his team.

Well Holtz wouldn't have that problem in Detroit. We still have fans that think Zadina and Veleno are more than mediocre bottom 6 forwards.

Id rather use the picks on a more known commodity than another prospect.

Everyone expected to get to the “play the kids” part of the season and it never came.

Last year, they kept him down in AHL to preserve his slide. This year, the intention was to work him into lineup, but other guys were playing well, and wingers stayed generally healthy, so he didn’t get regular time. We probably waited a bit long to send him back to Utica. It’s just one of those things that happens when a team plays better than expected.

He is doing fine in Utica. Here’s his first point from last night.

To be fair, at the time of the Reinhart trade, no one had any idea Levi would be that good. He had hardly played at all.

Holtz is still going to be an elite goal scorer in all likelihood. No reason for the Devils to trade an ELC rookie for picks, especially when they still have many solid prospects in the pipeline

At the time of the trade, Levi had only shown good potential in one WJC tourney. He didn't even play in the CHL. And he wasn't traded for picks, he was part of a deal for Florida to get a ppg impactful player.

Or use these picks to acquire Debrincat sarcasm. Maybe a big 3-way trade between Devils, Red Wings and Senatorsapplaud

Doesn't mean Devils have to use these picks. Trade them for a player who can make a big impact right away.

"Good" is an understatement. Analytically, he is the best goaltender in U20 WJC history - leads both SV% and GAA among starters in the tournament's history. I'm aware that a great team can help to that, but his performance was insane and his numbers do in fact back that up. Watched all of the Canadian games that tournament.

I'm aware they had Spencer Knight, who, at that time, looked to be better. But man, his performance was so impressive that if I were the GM, would've tried my damndest to keep him.

While theoretically DeBrincat is possible, in practice we would have to get rid of Palat to make it work

I am making a 3-way trade where Palat is included atm LOL. Does Palat have value with that contract?

I think minimal but still positive value as long as a team is willing to take him, but I also don't know if Fitz would be willing to send him. It's a bad look for him as a GM, and since he signed the guy I'd expect he'd want to keep Palat around.

That's true but it's also an extremely small sample size playing against players who are all still teenagers. Also the team in front of him was one of the most stacked ever. I see your point but I think the hockey world tempered their reaction with the fact that it was only over 7 games that he did that.

Small sample size or not; it is so damn impressive. I felt as if he was just a throw-in to Florida.
