Hellebuyck Trade

Created by: Tombot97
Team: 2023-24 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: May 2, 2023
Published: May 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Chicago fans I don't know if you would be willing to take Peterson's contract, I just chose a bad team with a ton of cap space. You seem okay with retaining cap hits and taking on bad contracts.

Jets fans what would you want for Hellebuyck if the team goes into a full rebuild from the Kings? Byfield and Clarke are nonstarters for Rob Blake in any trade and in this scenario Hellebuyck needs to be 50% retained. PLD, Wheeler, Schefflie, and Hellebuyck are all being made available in this scenario so retaining isn't a problem and you would be looking for young players. Peterson has a M-NTC so he won't be involved in the trade as well.

I wouldn't do it. Goaltender performance is too dependent on the team they play behind. There's no guarantee that Hellebuyck would be an above average goaltender on the Kings.

That is way too much to spend on one season of what could end up being average goaltending.

Hawks say add the '24 2nd to the deal. Kings can keep Madden and Spence if they want. Neither guy has any real value from the Hawks perspective.

laugh laugh Hellebuyck wants to win a cup now and that's not happening in LA. And no way is Hellebuyck taking any less than 8 x $10,000,000 he wants close to Carey Price money or Sergei Bobrovsky money. And LA doesn’t have the cap space for that. Detroit can beat that offer easily to bring him home

San Jose Accepts! Petersen could rebound and getting. A solid RD and a 2nd to take on a contract that expires before the sharks are good again isn’t a bad deal.

Bro that’s such a good offer to take on Peterson , idk how anyone can say no. I’ve never seen Chicago fans say yes to a trade since they announced their rebuild, must be a depressing mood in Chicago

It’s like Chicago fans are allergic to acquiring good prospects unless they’re top line or top pairing Lmao

Would you resign Korpisalo to a 4-4.5AAV 4 yearish deal, keep Peterson, or trade for someone else like Ullmark? The Kings were top 5 in xGA 5v5 last year so if Helluybuck is elite next year and the team performs again it should workout. I admit there is no guarantee both the Kings and Hellebuyck perform at the same level next year. The deal would probably include a huge extension but i'm not sure about the contract he would sign.

I don't see the Kings giving up more than a 2nd to dump what amounts to a cumulative $6.85M in cap space over the next 3 years.

I'd offer Korpisalo no more than 2 years @ $2.5M. I'd probably offer a 2nd and a prospect for Ullmark (Boston probably says no). After that, I'd keep Petersen and run with Copley as the starter, then look for a goaltender at the deadline next Spring.

It's just not enough to take on that contract. Petersen may bounce back, but any player could "bounce back". You don't take on that kind of contract predicated on 'maybes'. He is a pure cap dump and should be treated as such. CHI has no need for Spence or Madden, either. We already have Mitchell who has the same build, plays the same type of game, and is arguably better than Spence, and CHI is probably gonna trade him or let him walk. Why would we would we value those same characteristics in another player? Madden would be an unnecessary redundancy clogging up roster space in the AHL. And what will likely be a late 2nd round pick in 2025 is pretty unappealing.

But yeah. Go ahead and take it SJS.

Sounds good. Korpisalo is probably getting a better deal than that with his advanced stats this year, but I'd love to have him at that number.

That is not a good offer for the Petersen cap dump. I don't think you realize the magnitude of that contract and how bad Petersen is. Has nothing to do with being top line or top pairing. It just doesn't make sense for CHI. Regardless, as you well know, Davidson has proven over and over for the most part that he has little interest in other teams prospects. He wants picks. Spence is overrated, Madden is of little interest, and a late 2025 2nd is less than interesting.

Probably. I wasn't very impressed with him in LA. He wasn't any better than Copley.

Spence isn’t overrated. He will be a solid 2nd pair Dman with great PP production

I thought about the sharks but I know you are in a cap crunch right now. I just checked and I guess you don't need to sign anyone to big deals in the next 2 years. Spence is a great prospect and is only in the AHL because we have 6 RDs capable of being in the NHL. Petersen is a wildcard but he could turn out to be an above average backup.

LOL well that went nowhere. I was not expecting the SJS fan or the Detroit Fans. I forgot they had their own underperforming 4+AAV goalie. Well Kaliyev, Lizotte, Grundstrom, Kupari, F**emo, Turcotte, Pinelli, Laferriere, Chromiak, Durzi, Spence, Bjornfot, Grans, Villalta, Portillo and 1st/2nds would be on the table. If a Jets fan who knows AHL/CHL Kings players want to comment what the Jets would want from us or just in general I'd appreciate it.

He’s actually owed 11 mil over the next 2 years. That screams 1st plus if you look at history (Marleau was 4.5 actual but 7 cap hit got a 1st, Monahan 5.5 got a 1st)
And both those players were still decent NHL players but had to go for cap purposes. Petersen isn’t NHL caliber and is signed for 2 more years 5 mil cap hit per year.

Petersen could rebound in a change of scenery and besides him the pick and Spencer fit huge needs for the sharks and the cap wasted even if Petersen doesn’t bounce back isn’t important this year and sharks have like 20 mil off the books for players they are likely not resigning.

Petersen doesn't need a change of scenery to rebound. He needs a summer of rest, followed by a strong training camp. Even with his substandard play, Petersen still went 5-3-2 in the NHL this season.

Actual dollars isn't important when it comes to trade value. There's only $6.85M in cap dollars on the table that the Kings need to clear, and they're not going to give up a 1st round pick or other quality assets to do so. If that's what it takes, the Kings will just keep Petersen and run him as backup to Copley all season. Then they can pursue a rental goaltender at the deadline again if the tandem isn't getting it done.

I would strongly consider the proposed trade with the Hawks once the Kings pay Petersen's Summer bonus. I think once the bonus is paid, Petersen should cost a pair of 2nds (in the mid round range) to move. I think this package is around that range. Late 2nd, Spence a pretty good RHD where the Hawks have really nothing between Regula and Rinzel (who is a while out), and Madden as a change of scenery 3rd peiece is not a bad return. I would prefer switching Spence for Grans and lose the 7th and call it Petersen, 2nd, Grans and Madden for future consideration.
