Bruins Retool- 2015 Part 2

Created by: Swgordo4
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: May 11, 2023
Published: May 11, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I guess the idea is if the Bruins were ok with 1 bad year similar to when they got DeBrusk, McAvoy, Carlo, Frederic. (Also ehhh...Seneshchyn and Zboril.) This would be like if Sweeney got a redo on 2015. We know how well that went. With a 2nd chance could Sweeney rebuild a young core to support Pasta, McAvoy, Lindholm, Zacha and Sway rather than waste their prime years?

This assume Bergeron and Krejci retire and Bertuzzi is too expensive. Also, the Bruins are outbid for a top line center among the better options. So...retool becomes a possibility. I wouldn't think the Bruins would go this route but if they did, what would that look like?

The roster I'm making would likely miss the playoffs if they also traded players at the deadline. Bruins still aren't a bottom 5 team unless injuries decimate the team.

A little over cap but basic idea. I'd prefer not to buyout Reilly hurting cap the next year. Maybe he rebounds a little and someone wants him for playoff depth.

Benefits
-to try to keep their top 10 protected pick (Detroit deal)
-get a few more draft assets
-add a young promising prospect with leverage from Ullmark's stellar season
- allow the Bruins to look at their young players (Lysell mid-seaon, Lohrei, Morrow, Beecher, Steen/McLaughlin)
- Bruins would have a variety of expiring contracts to trade for picks at the deadline and the following year as well. (Forbort, DeBrusk, Foligno, Reilly/ Zboril) (Following year, Hall, Marchand are on expiring deals. I'd be inclined to keep Marchy until he hangs them up though)
-Save money for free agents for when the cap goes up. (Patient approach)
-By not committing to long-term deals, the Bruins have flexibility to shape the rest of the roster (when ready)

Trades

BOS
  1. Morrow, Scott [Reserve List]
  2. 2023 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Carolina pairing Ullmark with Kochetkov while trying to maximize cup window with core players. It's a late first, no biggie. Morrow is a big ask but if Ullmark is staying in the east, that's what I'd ask for
CAR
  1. Ullmark, Linus
Additional Details:
I'd only trade Ullmark to Carolina if I planned to have a year to retool. (Bergy and Krejci retire)
2.
BOS
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (CBJ)
  2. 2023 5th round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Potential top-4 puck mover, underappreciated in Boston.
CBJ
  1. Grzelcyk, Matt
Additional Details:
I would like to keep with McAvoy but under a rebuild, I'd sell his value. I like the fit with Pens too but I don't like their return for this year's draft.

The Canes will not be trading y'all a first or Morrow let alone both at the same time for Ullmark.

Too much for Ullmark. Maybe a low 1st from someone or a high 2nd but that's it.

Canes and no team in the East should be helping the Bruins with their cap. Ullmarek would have few teams on his trade list that want/or could afford him (Canes would be one), so it's not like the Bruins would have any leverage in the trade return. Canes might get better value offer sheeting Swayman.

Absolutely not for the Canes. This class in terms of netminders is way too strong to be using one of the best defensive prospects in the league and a 1st on a goalie that laid a giant egg in the playoffs. Would much rather offer sheet Swayman, which would come at a lower cost of asset, than this

I think CBJ would gladly give that for 1 year of Grzelcyk as they wait for non Jiricek (who is hopefully an NHLer next year) D prospects to develop. Does he need to play the right side or is he flexible? Maybe end up with something along the lines of:

Werenski-Peeke
Grzelcyk-Jiricek
Grubrandson-Boqvist
Blankenburg

God this makes me seeth about the Grubrandson contract.

Well somebody is going to. Might as well be the ones to benefit from it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That being said. Canes are NOT doing THIS. Holy hell.

No way Canes give up Morrow. The 1st would potentially be in play considering where that 1st will be, but the 2nd piece would be pretty minimal if it all. More likely a B+ prospect and mid pick.

Quite frankly if they are going to do that might as well OS Swayman and pay a 1st/3rd for him.

Of course after the Canes win the cup they will have a difficult time reconciling trading for a goalie as opposed to just re-signing the guy that hoisted the Cup. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I understand Canes fans saying no for Morrow. Not giving up a first a late first? A first and a different prospect seems reasonable assuming the Canes don't win the cup making them more hungry to add a goalie with an open spot next year. By adding Ullmark you'd weaken a conference rival in the process.

What I'm surprised at is that Ullmark is the likely Vezina winner, 2 years under control, reasonable cap hit and few seem willing to part with a late first round pick (20's-30's)? Contending teams should be willing to go after Ullmark for a player that likely won't fit their winning timeline anyway. Bruins will likely want a prospect that could add to their core even 3rd-4th line, 3rd pair. If the deal is with LA Kings, a player like Jordan Spence would be a starting point for me to fill in for Clifton now or Carlo down the road. I woulda thought a counter would be a first round (28-32) and a lesser prospect. Canes seem happy with Anderson and I'd think a team out of the west if more likely to emerge as suitors but I'd kick the can if I were Carolina's management knowing that Aho has 2 years left on his deal.

I can remember a time when the Bruins got an unprotected first from San Jose in 2016 and a prospect Sean Kuraly (future 4th liner and key contributor) for Martin Jones. The Sharks picked 9th in 2015 so I'm sure the Bruins thought this pick could be a top 15 rather than 30th.

Before the trade for Jones this was his stats: (Nothing to write home about).
G GS W L S GA GAA SV% SO Minutes
LAK 19 18 12 6 -- 0 500 33 1.81 467 .934 4 1,094:40
LAK 15 11 4 5 -- 2 307 29 2.24 278 .906 3 775:22

I think Swayman is on a different level that Jones "was" at the time of the deal. If a team wants Sway the ask is more than the Martin Jones return.

I'm sure the Bruins needing cap room plays a role but there should be competition for Ullmark's services if he actually became available. The Bruins can shed salary in a variety of ways and trading Ullmark is not a necessity so they could happily sit in the crease with him again.
