It has to be Marner

Created by: rgwhite17
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 13, 2023
Published: May 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not sure if Seattle would be interested in this but this is the kind of Marner deal that would be worth making. 20 goal kind of guy and a top prospect. And get cap savings. I don’t love the orielly and Kane deals but feel like the term is necessary to get them to sign and would help Matthews resign.
Resign Matthews and Nylander, JT deal will end freeing up money for knies and wright in the future.

I actually don't hate that trade for Seattle, assuming Marner is excited to go there and they get the feeling that he would sign an extension next summer.

Congrats on the first leaf’s agm I’ve seen without 5 unrealistic UFA signings and having a somewhat realistic Marner trade

Ok fair enough, wasn’t sure on the situation there where he just has a year left. Can add more or leafs could just sign someone in free agency instead.

Right? I think it does too, they are loaded with depth scoring, this would give them an 100 point guy. They have Beniers so feel like they would let go of wright in a deal like this?

They can. It’s only like 300k this year and 2 million next year. Figure someone would want a couple picks to do that.

Yeah Marner would be a perfect fit for them. The 2 year rental scares me, but if they can sign him long term I think it's a trade that would work well for both teams.

Its a decent deal but I think they'd be better off going for Scheifele and Hellebuyck in Winnipeg. The Jets have a lot less leverage and have more cap flexibility than the Leafs

Ya I guess that’s the risk for anyone trading for him. Could
Always get assets back next year if they can’t resign him.
Feel like Marner will hate to go but it would be best thing for him, fully believe he will eventually win a cup and dominate a playoffs somewhere else but it’s been the same thing here, pressure too much for him being the Toronto kid I think.

Depends on if they want to replenish the roster with young controllable players or try and keep this going.

They value wright S the future 2C but this trade would make their team absolutely lethal. I feel like Toronto would only do this in a nuclear option type situation where AM is also gone.

As a leaf I have a hard time wanting a jets player just with how annoying they have all been last few years lol but I could see a deal like that as well. It doesn’t give you the cap flexibility the Seattle deal does tho.

I dont see why Seattle wouldnt rather have a top3 goalie and a top center that scores 40 goals and performs in the playoffs after scoring 14 goals in 2018 post season over Marner. Marner could be an option though

Matthews is our best player, he played hurt a lot of the year. Kane will put up a lot of points too, yes I know he’s horrible defensively, we will be losing that with Marner gone
But it’s a trend with this group, they can not score in the playoffs when it really matters (besides Tampa series) one series in 7 years not good enough. Tired of watching this group struggle to score in big games. Even the Tampa games late in the series we couldnt, just found a way to win.

We just had the best season in nearly 20 years and now it’s blow it up time? That’s not a logical reaction.

Traded one player off the roster? It’s not blowing it up.
Been saying this for years,
Matthews not gonna be traded (unless he won’t resign)
JT not gonna waive
Nylander makes 4 mil less than Marner and shows up in the playoffs more consistently
Gotta be Marner. This is a good way to reset things a bit and still be a cup contender.

We scored the same amount of goals as the team that beat us in the series. Matthew Tkachuk score literally 0 goals this series and Barkov scored just 1. That’s just how hockey is sometimes. Our time will come. The one thing we can’t do is blow up the core. We just have to keep trying until we finally have that miracle run most teams eventually go on.

I only think we bite if we get the Chicago Mrazek deal.

I think a lot of people try to compare our group to Washington and say the break through came for them, it will for us. Just because they finally managed to get past the second round once and then won the cup doesn’t mean it will happen that way for our group.
Sharks were a cup contender for a decade and never won it.
The team that just beat us traded their MVP last year and are better for it.
I’d never just wanna trade Marner for the sake of it but if the right deal is there leaf fans need to get over this core and let’s reset the roster a bit and get back at it.

But what deal is the ‘right deal’? There’s literally zero chance we can win any Marner trade. The panthers traded their MVP last season so they could acquire a player of Marner’s caliber. I think the most this team could do is hire a new coach and wait until Tavares’ contract is up. I’ve been saying for a while that the Tavares signing occurred when the rest of this core wasn’t READY to win. They’re ready to win now. If we can lock up Marner Matthews and Nylander, I think our best bet will be to use the Tavares money throughout the lineup. It’ll take time. But I think it’ll work.
