Monster deal for 1

Created by: rb1481

Initial Creation Date: May 17, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here is the logical from Chicago's perspective. They have no one to play with Conor and they wont for a few years. And at that point he will be making $15 million+ per year. If they trade down and take Michkov (assuming he is there), by the time he comes over in 3 years, they will have made 10 additional first round picks (likely 5 in the top 10) and can surround him with a young core to build into a cup contender for a decade. Yes, giving up on a generational talent isn't super wise, but Michkov would have been a #1 in any other draft and can be a superstar as well. The timeline fits for Chicago.

Lukas Reichel is ready to jump to the NHL, Nazar will likely come over at the end of the season next year, Kevin Korchinski will be ready to make it to the NHL soon as well. Philipp Kurashev is already with the hawks and is showing to be a useful player. Are they ready to contend for the playoffs now? No, but they're only a few years away. Trading away a potentially generational talent because they are going to have to pay him in a few years seems like a poor reason to make a trade. You build around players like Bedard.

MTL would need to include one of Slafkovsky, Coulfield, Suzuki, if not two plus everything else you had. When Lindros held out, Quebec got Steve Duchesne, Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Chris Simon, Phil's 1st in 93 (Jocelyn Thibault) + 94 (traded to NYI they used it on Brett Lindros) and 15m in cash.

I am sorry but how wouldn't Chicago have talent to surround Bedard? They have 4 other picks in the 2024 and 2025 drafts plus the 19th pick this year as well. And the Hawks next 2 picks are likely to be lottery picks as well, giving them 3 top 10 picks and 3 additional picks in the next 3 drafts. That literally gives them talent to surround Bedard

Plus Reichel, a top 30 prospect as rated by Wheeler and Pronman, plus Korchinski arguably a top 2 defensive prospect both playing this coming season full-time, not to mention Nazar a at the end of the season.

None of these draft picks will be in the NHL for 2-3 years at minimum. By that point Bedard will be out of his entry-level deal. Even if Reichel and KK and Nazar are impactful this coming year or next year, they tore if down to the studs, so there is no one else to help. It wastes the first 3 years of his career. They might as well punt it the next 3 years, take Michkov, and then build a powerhouse from 2026-2036
