How does this make the Leafs better? Nylander was terrific in the playoffs.

Yzerman isn’t that stupid. He jumps at the chance. Lalonde was on HNIC gushing over Nylander on multiple telecasts. He was also quoted as saying the Wings have no snipers.

Nylander is absolutely useless defensively.

I hope Yzerman isn't stupid enough to give away 9OA for 28OA and a rental.

Read: extension. You hope to draft a player of Nylanders caliber 9th overall.

These are some of the players Detroit has drafted in the 1st round:

Evgeny Svechnikov
Dennis Cholowski
Michael Rasmussen
Filip Zadina
Joe Veleno
Lucas Raymond
Anthony Mantha
Riley Sheahan
Tom McCollum
Brendan Smith
Jakub Kindl

Without including the last couple drafts because those players are yet to be full-time NHL’ers, there are 2 players — Larkin & Seider — that could be considered better than Nylander. Seider still has some maturing to do in his game but I would say he will be better than Nylander when all said and done. Larkin is similar offensively, although Nylander has outpaced him the last couple years. I would say Larkin is the more valuable player because of position and would probably be the better player if he played in a better system than Detroits.

All that said that’s about 20 drafts, giving you about a 10% chance of the player being as good or better then Nylander. Detroit, NHL GM’s, would jump at the chance of adding an extended Nylander AND a 1st round pick for the pleasure of dropping down 19 spots. Nylander is exactly the type of player Detroit needs.

But you aren’t selling high. You are adding a first round pick for a chance at a player that might be as good. History says the odds of 9th overall being better are slim.

Hot garbage trade. Leafs aren't trading a 40 goal scorer to move up the the draft. Absolute stupidity.

That's a whole lotta nothingburger you wrote considering that all but Raymond was drafted by Holland, who is quite awful at drafting.

Regardless, at 9OA if we get a one-dimensional player (like Willy) who isn't scoring 100+ points, I'm going to be disappointed.

No, Detroit declines instantly. Make it NYI's pick at 17 and sure. Otherwise, deal him elsewhere.

Yzerman was Tampa GM from 2010 to 2019. During that time he had 9 first round picks. He missed on every one except Andrei Vasilevskiy who was drafted with Tampa’s second 1st round pick in 2012, 19 th overall and 9 spots after he drafted Koekkoek 10th overall. Even the great Stevie Yzerman didn’t know how good Andrei Vasilevskiy would be or he would have drafted him before Koekkoek. The draft is a crap shoot and you are going to be disappointed if you are expecting a 100+ point player because in 23 years of drafting Yzerman has never drafted one.

Since Yzerman never drafted Larkin is it fair to say Nylander is better than any forward Stevie Y has ever drafted? Only Seider (drafted 6th overall) could be a better player. I rest my case, Nylander >>> 9th overall — especially when Yzerman is at the helm.

Brett Connolly 6th overall
Vladislav Namestnikov
Slater Koekkoek 10th overall
Andrei Vasilevskiy
Jonathan Drouin 3rd overall
Tony DeAngelo
Brett Howden
Cal Foote 14th overall
Nolan Foote

Raymond, Seider, Edvinsson, Kasper... He is doing just fine in the four years here in Detroit.

Some very high picks and there’s only 1 I would trade Nylander for straight up.

The Wings and Leafs are in pretty different spots rn. Nylander isn't old by any means, but trading a guy like Raymond for example, or suggesting that Yzerman hasn't drafted well with the Wings is kinda silly.

It just isn't the kind of move they need to be making right now. Whether the value is reasonable is irrelevant.

I never said he hasn’t drafted well, only that the odds of getting a player of Nylander’s caliber at 9 are slim. He’s never drafted a forward as good as Nylander in the first round. Ditto for the Wings, they’ve drafted one — Larkin — in the last bunch of years.

I get it though, these forums are full of draft pick lovers. Trading bonafide young superstars for 1st round picks like candy or suggesting that star is nowhere near the value of a first when history tells us it’s the opposite and you rarely get 80-100 point players after the first few picks. Yes it’s possible but that 9th pick is no sure thing and odds are it might be much worse than Nylander.

Kinda entirely besides my point. My point is that Detroit isn't in a position rn to be trading high picks away. Nylander is great, just not a move that needs to be made by the Wings currently

I'll concede. My only disagreement would be if an extension isn't guaranteed, but I read over the "with an extension" part, so yeah I'd do it.

And that’s fine. There aren’t any of those 4 I would trade straight up for Willy. Toronto should try and keep him.
