Cap dump and moving up in the draft

Created by: KentMcNally
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2023
Published: Jun. 1, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Montreal jumps to #14 AND leaves some decent cap space ($6.5M) to pick up another cap dump from a playoff team at the trade deadline in order to get another late first round pick in 2024 (which would help with the loss of some of Montreal's 2nd and 3rd round picks in the trades below).
This team finishes out of the playoffs and gets a lottery pick next year for sure.

No thanks, Leafs would rather buy Murray out and save the 1st/not having to take on Dvorak

I don’t think anyone wants to help you out with that Joel Armia problem. You’re stuck with him now lmao. Best just to accept it

What is Buffalo supposed to do with those 3 players? We already have 8 defensemen and 3 goalies on our 23 man roster

Maybe so. I just know that Nashville loves their Finnish and Swedish players. (Plus Armia is only costing Nashville $2.2M, not the full salary).

Maybe we could trade him to the Finnish National team, where Armia always lights it up..... and then he returns to Montreal and returns to being Habs Joel Armia.

I thought that Allen could be insurance for the young goalies and Evans is a good 4th line guy.

Kovacevic can bounce between the AHL and NHL on a "as needed" basis.

Buffalo giving up a 5th rounder (unlikely to ever play in the league) and getting NHL players + a second round pick (given the cap space the Sabres have) does not seem atrocious to me.

I don't know if i'd give Caufield that contract, i'd want a tiny bit less for 2 less years.

OK. Montreal could trade Dvorak to another team if Toronto does not want him. I thought Dvorak would be a poor man's Ryan O'Reilly replacement if O'Reilly signs elsewhere. Dvorak is not terribly expensive (especially at $3M).

To the Leafs, he isn't... Dvorak needs to play in the top 6 to be effective and that's not where the Leafs will play him. ROR played all of the tough minutes, something that I'm not sure Dvorak can do... Also, Leafs are going to sign ROR, he's from the Ontario area and wants to stay close to home. Leafs aren't going to give up a 1st for that.

Do you think Toronto would do the trade if Dvorak is out of the equation (i.e. solely for cap relief purposes and the 3rd round pick from Montreal)?

If it's your 2023 2nd, 100%. I think it's going to be Murray+2023 1st for rebuilding team's 2023 2nd or Murray will get bought out

Montreal's 2nd round pick is #37 and the Toronto pick is #28. I cannot see a team taking on Murray at $4.6M to only move up 9 spots at the end of the first round. I could be wrong and I do get your point about Toronto just choosing to buy out Murray instead, but I think Toronto may be willing to give up more than that. I think the Montreal third rounder (#69 in the draft) and perhaps a cheaper player than Dvorak who is effective could get it done.
Maybe Toronto would want David Savard as a Jake Muzzin replacement.

We will have to waive 3 players for this to make any sense. That alone makes it not make sense

Yikes, you are right. I should have looked at who they need to sign this off season.

Edmundson can go to another team that DOES have cap space, wants a veteran D man and wants to improve their draft status (Montreal was giving a 2nd to Ottawa for their 3rd in the same draft year) in order to take his cap hit.

I just want to make sure I'm reading this right - so you'll take Granlund and give us a first + prospect to move up to #14? Um - yes please.

Then maybe it's Murray+2023 BOS pick+ 1 4rth for MTL's 2023 2nd? I think Treliving is going to go after bigger named, bigger role eligible defensemen instead of the Savards of the world (I mean like Severson or whomever with Marner [hopefully] out the window)

Who is Montreal giving up that they cannot live without? I do not see anyone being part of the core going to other teams. Plus, having $6.5M in cap space is likely going to allow Montreal to take another cap dump and get another first round pick. So they get #14 in a deep draft, probably another first round pick next year and they do not lose anyone essential.
