Made the Leaf worse and more expensive in net. Detroit doesn't do that for one year of Nylander. Even if LA did that trade its would have to be 50% retention. Better keep Timmins instead of giving away for nothing.

If you are gonna screw the Flames at least take them to dinner first.

It's a fair trade considering the rough season Markstrom just had.

Screwed the Flames? Leafs are screwed taking Markstrom at 6m. X 3. Lots better goalies available in UFA cheaper.

Young with cost control means nothing if the guy can't play in his own end. You know who else was that? Dermott.

It’s just not tho. Yeah Markstrom had a rough season but TJ Brodie (I love him but the Flames have zero use for him) and very late first wouldn’t get both Markstrom and Mangiapane. This is based on the premise that the Flames sell low on both of them which they wouldn’t do and even if they sold low you could definitely get more than this.

And if this season was fluke and he bounces back the Flames look like idiots. It’s not like Markstrom has been declining for years, he had a bad season and started to get better towards the end. It would be incredibly dumb to move him now.

Maybe I should have added Samsonov but the Flames already have two good goalies. But, I think the core of the trade makes sense. Treliving signed Markstrom and probably still believes in him, and he drafted Mangiapane, so I think the Leafs and Flames can be trade partners.

I think 100% the Flames and Leafs will be trade partners, I just don’t really like the return. I also don’t know if Markstrom will waive his NMC to go to Toronto just cause of how bad the media pressure was on him when he was playing bad in Calgary, I can only imagine how much worse it would be in Toronto.

Detroit declines. We’re not trading Edvinsson or Kasper for anybody. Nylander maybe gets a 1st, 2nd and perhaps Mazur WITH an extension.

The timeline here doesn't make much sense. why trade away Matthews for two excellent young prospects if you're gonna take on an aging goaltender with a huge salary, plus other forwards who are out of their primes. if you get rid of Matthews and Nylander you have to commit to either a partial rebuild where Clarke and Byfield make sense, or a retool where you are in win now mode, where the Markstrom deal makes more sense. not both, or the trades are useless.

This team is good enough to make the playoffs and then who knows. If a Vezina calibre goalie gets hot at the right time any team could go on a run.
