Avs decline. A top pairing defenceman is more valuable then a top line winger. Also the avs add cap in this situation, which isnt something they can afford to do.

Hi! Nylander is a great player, no doubt. With that said. Colorado should not trade one of their most important players for a rental winger. An yes, he would be a rental. There is no way Colorado can re-sign him and doesn’t end up with a huge hole a 2C and a considerably weakened D. Also, Toews is more valuable to Avs system than Nylander would be.

Toews is also expiring... I imagine the contracts will be similar

So even if they are, avs give up the better player and get to add a depth piece as well? so leafs win the trade in the short term, and best case its a draw long term. Leafs would need to add something like Jarnkrok or Lafferty, to make up for the imediate cap savings....still not sure that would make up the gap in positional value.

I mean I think Nylander is the better player but I guess its just opinion they are very close. Nylander is a bit younger though and definitely a flashier player. Avs have Byram and Girard at LD and need some forwarwd help. I think it could be a straight up trade and be fair as well.

You trade from where you are strong to build where you are weak.
Avs have a lot of good D men and they will not miss Toews really. Nylander gives them a 40 goal scorer and they are short of quality forwards.
However If i am the leafs I would not do this. Toews does not improve the defence enough to lose a player like Nylander. Leafs can improve the defence with UFAs just as well, considering Toews cap hit and his pending UFA. If I am the Leafs it is Nylander for Byram.

Toews is a top 10 defenceman in the league, Nylander isnt a top 10 winger. Even if for arguments sake you want to say he is. The leafs save money roughly 3 million in the short term, also get the more valuable positional player. Plus the avs add LOC? No no thats a no.

This is just typical overvaluing your own player while undervaluing other team's players. Toews is a much better D than anything you'll find in UFA and scoring wings aren't that hard to acquire. And Byram is far more valuable than Nylander. But good luck finding that UFA D that is just as good as Toews.

Defense is a premium position; guys that can play top pair and play well in all three zones are not a dime a dozen. Wings, even higher end ones, are quite a bit easier to find. Toews is more valuable than Nylander.

Hi!

I think the point has been made very clear from Colorados point of view thanks to, @Will27 and @NMavsFan

I can only add that it’s quite telling that you don’t se these proposals from Colorados side on this site (surely i have missed one or two), but from the TML side quite frequently. That speaks volumes to me about how much Toews is valued because of EVERYTHING that he brings to Avs system. I think that on this site the Avalanche side has been very clear about Toews only being available for a package that includes a cost-controlled 2C. Can he be traded for a winger, sure he can! None of us actually knows, unless GMCM is hiding in here. But you will face some resistance on Capfriendly for proposing it. You wanna keep on proposing it anyways, sure go ahead!
