What I think they should do now

Created by: edeangel84
Team: 2023-24 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 9, 2023
Published: Jun. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It’s very obvious they want to have a playoff team next season and they aren’t bringing in Babcock to coach a bunch of kids. They need a 1C who can impact the team over the next couple of seasons and Zegras would do that. The trade with Carolina brings back draft assets and sends out players they don’t need to keep.

Canes pass Ros and Bov don’t do it for the Canes to trade those pieces.

Why? He won’t be helping you for at least 2 seasons and Zegras is already a proven 1C who’s still very young.

So then everything plays out the same since Jarmo wasn't fired in the past. Nice.

Zegras is many things, he's not a 1C right now. He's a 2C currently. Could he become a 1C? Yeah, sure. But he's not there yet

Zegras is not a 1C yet he probably will be soon though. I also think carlsson has a higher ceiling and fits better with the jackets needs

A higher ceiling than Zegras? Zegras is the poor man’s Jack Hughes and I don’t mean that in a negative way. I won’t claim to be the lead expert on Leo Carlson but unless you think he’s another Elias Peterrsson I’d take Zegras.

He has put up similar numbers to pettersson, backstrom, and the sundin twins in their draft years. Jackets already have a zegras type in Kent Johnson. Need someone bigger like carlsson

Fair enough. If you could luck out and get Pettersson himself that would be huge but I can’t see Vancouver doing it.

Yeah I’ve wanted him on the jackets since he came into the league. Doubt the jackets could afford what they would be asking. He’s also going to need a huge extension soon

If you redrafted the 2019 class today, Zegras would go in the top 5. We've definitely hit on him. I could see the argument for Zegras for 3OA, but Anaheim is assuming all the risk there. The reward upside needs to be high enough for us to give up a known, young elite piece. Certainly asking for 33OA going back the other way isn't going to happen, even with Peeke tacked on.

So no, the Ducks don't take this. There's an argument to be made in Zegras for 3OA and a roster player, but not with any draft capital of significance going back to Columbus with Zegras.

I am not shocked both fan bases didn’t like it and I as the neutral thought of it lol. I get that trading a high pick for a kid who’s a face of the Ducks young team is going to be controversial but I think it’s a fair deal from my no dog in the fight eyes.
