Where We Stand on June 10th

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2023-24 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 10, 2023
Published: Jun. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bjornfot and Kupari given their Qualifying Offers only. Obviously, some wriggle room with Vilardi's bridge deal, but someone from the main roster has to go in order to create room for the other goalie.

I'm tired of people blithely (and mindlessly) saying, "Well, you could just trade Grundstrom and Durzi and then you'd have $3 million in additional cap space." Wrong. Trading guys off the main roster creates holes that have to be filled with players whose cap hit will be about $800,000 (at least). That means trading Grundstrom nets us $500,000 and trading Durzi nets us $900,000.

As our esteemed colleague @tryger has said more than once, it looks like trading one of Viktor Arvidsson, Alex Iafallo or Trevor Moore is the most realistic solution to our cap pressure. (Of course, it's always possible -- barely possible -- Rob Blake can do some Mikey-Anderson-like magic with Gabe Vilardi.)

Maybe this will stop the Hellebuyck and Saros* idiocies. But I doubt it.

Does that seem low for Villardi?

Do you think they're signing Korpisalo and going with a Korpi/Copley tandem?

Do think the Jets and Kings line up well for a Helle trade, Kings have some assets they could part with that the Jets could use.

Haven’t done a Kings ACGM in a while, but I would probably look at moving:

1. Roy - I know he is underrated on this site, so it’s probably a dead end in a lot of places. But if Doughty is going to get his normal 25-27 min a game, Clarke is only going to see his role expand, it’s hard to imagine Roy’s minutes increasing. And trade market, as always, can be quite frothy for RD.

2. Iafallo - would seem to me that there would be a broad market for him considering he can probably fold into any existing system. Whereas a guy like Arvidsson, or even Vilardi, seem to fill a more specific need.

3. One of Kupari, Turcotte - young centers are rarely moved, so along with RD, they are best way to stretch the return for a goalie.

Just my two cents from a few thousand miles away…

Agree 100%. And, as usual, your two cents worth a lot more than I paid for them. Thanks! smile

Preach! Durzi isn’t the answer for cap space, at his contract and the points he puts up (how quickly we forget out PP woes from last season), that’s the type of contract you keep holding onto. Arvidsson is my best guess because I don’t think they reup him after this season. I know you think Iafallo, but ask yourself who do you trust on the PK and who can honestly play on every line?

No idea how this finally shakes out, one of those three will need to be moved to make a Stanley cup contending team, however LA could punt this to the trade deadline. We made the playoffs with abysmal goaltending for the first half last season.

Not for a bridge, in my opinion.

Korpisalo will probably cost around $3 million, so the cap problem remains. But he'd be an acceptable short-term solution, in my opinion. Hellebuyck only makes sense if Winnipeg retains 50% and one of the three forwards I mentioned here went back the other way, no matter what other prospects were included from the Los Angeles end.

I think that is probably the same question other GMs are asking too. Not every team has a spot for Arvidsson. Most any team could find use for Iafallo because he can fit anywhere.

I get you, but

1. Gavrikov was reupped because of his play with Roy, I’d bet that LA’s top-4 is solidified for the beginning of the season. He is really LA’s only pure defensive right shot defenseman,

2. Iafallo is the type of players cup teams are built on IMO. Strong defense-first forwards is the best method against Vegas and the Oilers, If you can shut down those top-6, the Kings third line will terrorize (Fiala/Vilardi)

3. I’m still trying to be patient, but yes those two players stocks sink if they don’t do something this coming season.

For me, any shopping of one Sean Durzi is contingent on how good of a showing Clarke and Spence have at camp. If both look to be ready, I’d be willing to use his value to upgrade the team in other areas, whether it’s a goalie or a can’t-miss upgrade at center. Not moving him for the sake of moving the minimal cap space he’d clear.

I’d say they trade Arvidsson, as much as it pains me to say that. Moore’s perceived value is down from last year and Iafallo has an extra year of term. That should solidify the top 9 at:

Kempe - Kopitar - Kaliyev
Iafallo - Danault - Moore
Fiala - Byfield - Vilardi

or some variation.

Just hoping now they can get Gabe signed to a reasonable bridge.

I don't think Vilardi gets that much on a bridge deal. I think they pull the same thing they did with Anderson and give him a 1 year $1.5m (500,000 over Mikey) and have an agreement already on a long term deal when he can resign during the season (6yr @ $5m).

I think trading either Grundstrum or Lizotte for a minimal cap space upgrade would be fine as it also opens a contract spot on the NHL roster for a kid.

You move Durzi if you can get a 1st or a young LHD with similar contract.

You only move one of Iafallo or Arvidsson if you have a deal that brings back a goalie that fits cap wise and age wise.

You only move Roy around the TDL if the Kings are out of the playoff race. I don't think they can resign him to a realistic number next offseason.

If they can't trade for a young goalie then the go the UFA route with maybe Alex Lyon, Alex Nedeljkovic or someone like that.

I'd totally do that from a Jets perspective, doubt the Jets would though as they're a terribly run organization.
