3 years of 2.475M in retention costs more than a 3rd, and Garland half retained returns a 1st+

True, how much do you think they’d have to pay to get him retained? Also normally i agree but with their back against the wall cap wise I would imagine most teams won’t be jumping to help them which would keep his cost down. I could be wrong just the way I was thinking.

I don't think you're far off in the Ducks trade, but it's a mid round pick from 24, not a probably high second. Anaheims 24 4th feels about right in place of the Boston 2nd.

Ya stepping back and looking at it I agree. It would change the Hanifin trade in this hypothetical then of course. Change from 2nd with condition to 3rd with 1st condition. Still kind of works with the signing or walking UFA.

Id look at it the same way as the hagel trade last year if you’re wanting garland at 50% retention. 2 1sts plus

Canucks would rather buy out Garland than pay a 3rd to dump him at half retained

The way I see it, Vancouver has to pay to get it retained to move him to free up some space they desperately need. The cost of Garland imo shouldn’t be as high as Hagel. was younger and was dealt on a team friendlier deal. Tried to keep both the Hanifin and garland deals in-line with the recent Provorov deal, somewhat of a template but obviously I could still be off!

I doubt that. 23/24 & 24/25 they’d only have a 900k hit on the cap but 4 years after that it would be 1.8m on their cap. Or pay a pick or two and have the whole amount gone.

Hanafin gets a 1st round pick easily. Hollowell and Abruzzese hold limited value. 2 x 2nds for Hanafin retained will not be enough. Will probably need to at least be a 1st + a 2nd and the 2 prospects. Even if he doesn't resign.

Sure hagel was cheaper but he returned 2 1sts and 2 prospects. Garland is a very similar player who would still be an absolute steal at 2.5m and the team acquiring him would have him for 3 years at that price.

Ya, tried to use the Provorov deal as a template but I was a bit off. Would have to be something like this to be similar:
    CGY: Hanifin
    CHI: 23 2nd(TBL)

    TOR: Abruzzese, Hollowell, 24 1st, 24 3rd(condition to 2nd If resigns)
    CGY: Vladar

    TOR: Vladar
    CHI: Hanifin(50%)

    My thoughts EXACTLY.

Timmins is an NHL-quality defender, but only a 6/7 right now. That's worth our best 2024 fourth, whatever that turns out to be.
