To most teams, 8 years of Bratt is worth more than 2 years of Marner….NJD wouldn’t add any picks.

it will be new jerseys job to get marner to resign, as it stands bratt doesnt have a deal and the difference between marner and bratt isnt a late first and a 4th

If Bratt signs his QO (1-year $5.45m)….the cap difference alone negates the value in the player. If Bratt extends long-term…the added term (most in his 20s) could make him more valuable than Marner at $11m x 2.

Just hard to envision a scenario where NJD is adding to Bratt for a full AAV Marner.

too many ifs, i can do that too, if marner resigns with the devils then this trade is is a massive win for the devils, marner is alot better than bratt

1)Marner would be deadly on NJ
2) Is it not easier to buy out Murray than to take on Vlasic?
3)Calgary has no cap and too many D. This makes no sense
4)People overvalue Wilson. Veteran depth doesn't have to be that expensive

1) I think its a fair deal
2) If Sj takes on 50% of his AAV I think he would be effective for the last few remaining years as a depth piece with the cap going up too.
3) as it stands right now yes, but I think Hanifin gets moved.
4) Fair deal for Willy

Marner would be deadly on any team but I dont see him as such an upgrade on Jasper to be worth the effort. Keep Jasper and use the extra 3 m to add some depth.
Makes no sense to add Vlasic and retain 1m salary on Brodie- might as well keep Brodie. And you are correct, see no reason for Calgary to make this deal.

Sharks aren’t buying out Vlasic. Nor are they trading him. Its more advantageous to keep him during a rebuild. Grier and co love Vlasic.

Marner, pick for Bratt
Marner (20% retained) for Bratt
Marner (50% retained) for Bratt, 1st, 4th

so? why wouldnt NJ be confident that they could retain him? they are on the up. if they cant then thats a NJ problem. hes a guy that becomes arguably your best player. and you get it for a guy that probably wont take his qualifying offer and 2 picks. you arent getting a player as good as marner with that package. especailly a player with more term that you desire.

bottom line of this is this isnt enough for marner

Doubtful Vlasic waives. People have speculated he might waive for Montreal because he's from there, but beyond that he's always consistently stated that he wants to remain a Shark.

As for the deal itself, the only real appeal for SJ is to save real dollars on his contract. This outcome would be better cap wise too, but we aren't really desperate for cap space right now. A buyout in his final year (or he just retires) is more likely if we end up needing the space. This is all before you take into account that we would be tying up a retention slot for 3 years when we are already using one on Burns for the next two. Overall I'd rather keep Vlasic and explore retaining salary on one of our other big contract veteran players.

He held out last time…squeezed the team for every dollar…forced them into making moves they didn’t want to make (including a friend/mentor losing his job). What will be his ask in UFA? $15 million? $16 million? No thanks. That is not the culture NJ is building. We can do without the “me first” diva crap.

hes probably 1.5m overpaid at the most. you can feel however you want. just know this isnt enough for marner and the other trades you suggested are jokes. thats the main point in all of this

The Devils competitive window just opened, and you're suggesting they cut the length of that window by trading a long-term asset in Bratt for a short-term asset in Marner?
That's nothing if not counterproductive for the Devils POV.
The Devils aren't looking to compete for 2-3 years, they're looking to contend for a decade and dealing Bratt for Marner (let alone adding picks on top) is just terribly short-sighted.
