Using the Provorov trade as a comparable

Description
For this, I used the Provorov trade. Pesce obviously doesn't have the extra year, but he's MILES better than Provorov. Pesce is a DFD that outproduced Provorov.

Provorov also has another year on the contract with retention, but also was traded because Philly got a good package for him and not because they didn't have the cap room to resign him.

Carolina have 30 million in cap space this summer and 46 next summer. They have room for Pesce LOL.

If they can't agree on a contract, clearly they don't. They also have a lot of other players to sign

And can sign them all quite comfortably... plus, Pesce would be one of the 1st. And not signing Pesce would have nothing to do with cap space. If a player wants more than they're worth, you move them. That's all Dreger reported LMAO. You really are making sh*t up huh?

It looks as though TOR gets around 2M in savings (Murray - half of Pesce) and a contract slot for a 3rd and 5th.

Sorry, you used the Provorov trade as an example and came up with that mind bender for 29 year old soon to be UFA Brett Pesce?

I'm not saying they would, just stating that's what this appears to be.

TOR shouldn't, as they can get the contract slot and more savings by just buying him out. Get to keep the picks.

So basically instead of buying out Murray and have a 650k cap hit, they trade picks and retain on someone else for 2 million… I think they will pass on that idea

Please keep in mind that you're using a trade from team that willingly hired Mike Babcock as a baseline.

So let me get this straight. Toronto gives up a 3rd and a 5th while dumping $4M and retaining approx. $2M for Pesce? You know Leafs could just put Murray in the AHL without a cost of draft picks? You know Leafs could also just put him on LTIR considering he doesn't want to play hockey anymore

Ivan Provorov - 2 years remaining, 2M retained, 26 years old, Columbus gave up 22OA and a 2024 2nd round pick

Brett Pesce - 1 year remaining, 0 retained, almost 29 years old to start season.. you want the Columbus return, plus an additional 2nd round pick in value, plus an A prospect, plus a 3rd pair cost controlled D, plus a bottom 6 F with term.

You're out of your mind.

Until I'm proven wrong that they can't fit all the contracts that need to be signed in the next two years under the cap, it will be a valid concern. The canes have 5 players signed through 2025.

Let's keep in mind the Sabres have absolutely zero need to ask for retained salary for Pesce.

this isnt even a good comparison. Why would Toronto retain on Pesce for this deal? The LAKs going had two years left and was so bad it was going to take 1st ++ to dump him. It isnt going to cost a 1st ++ to dump Murray

Why not use Faulk's deal as an example then? Bokk + Edmundson for Faulk.

I've run it to test it out, and they should be perfectly fine with re-signing their current players (even Pesce). The only spot they could potentially run in to trouble is if they want to add any higher cost players either via trade or through UFA. This assumes players like Necas, Aho, and others take reasonable contracts and aren't looking for big overpayments which the Canes don't seem too fond of doing anyways.

When I put it together just to see, I figured on 9.5 for Aho, 7.5 for Necas, 6.5 for Pesce, 6.5 for Skjei, 6 for Jarvis and TT, and some smaller bumps for guys like Fast and Martinook, with a pay decrease for Staal. Doing that they still had like 10 million in space and around 20 or so in space when Slavin is due. That's pretty ample space to fill out a bottom 6, bottom 2 D, and a goalie when they also probably have some ELC's coming in during that time with guys like Morrow, Trikozov, Nikishin and others among their prospects.

Not disagreeing that it's probably too much from Buffalo, but I don't think they are trading him due to cap concerns with the upper limit so much as they are just not going to overpay where they view his value at.
