Why are we trading Zary for a guy entering the last year of his contract before unrestricted free agency?

If that's the offer Treliving is accepting for Nylander, it's going to be without an extension and without Conroy being allowed to talk to Nylander's agent prior.

I think the Pens decline since they can't resign him and Guentzel.
I do like the Nylander trade though

He's trying to replicate the Tkachuk trade, but I'm guessing you read "with extension" and noticed the problematic 2023 2nd in there.

You can keep Vladar. Canes have no need for a backup, and won’t be interested in overpaying to acquire one.

Well that and Tkachuk could only sign an 8 year extension with Calgary (hence the cost) whereas Nylander can sign an 8 year extension with anyone

Can't think of good trade, add "extension" as part of the trade.

What has Zary done for you to not want to include him in a trade for a top line winger in his prime?

Can have the extension agreed in principal and not make it official until later.

What in your opinion is bad about this trade? Leafs get a top 4 RD; which they lack, a top 6 winger, prospect and pick for a player they may not be able to re-sign

Yeah, but I'm sure in this case Conroy is going to want things on paper.

I also doubt Treliving allows for talks because if they are dealing him for that package, it probably means Nylander is seeking more than he's willing to pay him, and maybe Conroy lower his offer to Zary + a 2nd + Tanev.

Oh I love for the Leafs, Toffelli and Hanifan for a year, Zary and a second. for one year of Nylander I just find making a trade with an extension as part of the deal is just fantasy 99% of the time.
It's a poor trade for the Flames , for one year of Nylander.
And the Leafs aren't going to have a meeting to with Nylander asking/telling him "We want your ass outta town, so hurry up and sign a contract so we can trade you to Calgary. But if you don't sign an extension you are welcome back and play for the Leafs for a Cup run,"

Hanifin has nothing to do with this trade.
It’s not for 1 year of Nylander. The extension isn’t signed by the leafs. It’s agreed to with the flames but not made official until after the draft.

Tied for first in production in the AHL this year for players 21 and under. Nylander is a rental only had 10 more points than Toffoli, whether he signs an extension after a trade has zero say on the trades value itself

That's called a "trust me bro" that is not a qualifiable value

My mistake, it's one of Tanev not Hanifan. Read my last paragraph above.....why, why, the Leafs allow Nylander to negotiate with the Flames? What a great way to piss one of your top players. So Nylander doesn't sign with the Flames, and now Nylander is expected to "love" the Leafs again. Wait till his fellow teammates hear about this.
Sorry, it's 99% fantasy that a team allow one of their players especially from a contending team to negotiate a deal with another team in order to make a trade.....one year from his hm being a UFA.

So let me get this straight. Toronto has zero involvement in the extension or extension talks at all but you want to just gift them more value?

It's more like he's literally not allowed to negotiate with Calgary at all until after July 1st at the earliest. At which point that draft pick involved is already drafted. On top of that, he would be negotiating with the new team so that has zero effect on a trade since conditional extension picks are illegal now

Not quite right. Nylander is under contract to the Leafs till July 2024. So he isn't allowed to negotiate with Calgary for full year unless the Leafs give permission. But we have so many trade on CF lately, where it isn't a question of allowing a negotiation for few week to July 2023, but a full year before the players contract expires. These trades and "extension permissions" to me are just fantasy.
