Created by: futurebobmckenzie
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2023
Published: Jun. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
BOS/PIT: Saw a Bruins fan propose this, I don’t hate it

EDM/PIT: Oilers move their expensive backup G with a little bit of retention, a depth forward, and a second while adding an inexpensive backup to Skinner and 2 young players that are cheap and deserve a shot and a 3rd

CHI/PIT: 14th and 30% retained Granlund for 19th, 67th, and Dickinson. Penguins get a bottom 6 center and move back whole Chicago gets to move up and get an even better player to help the rebuild and a middle 6 center that has retention.

cant imagine why the Bruins would do that trade, just getting nothing of value for two important players. I get the cap implications, but it's just poor asset management

Honestly, don't retain on Granlund. It seems counter productive. You could also ask the hawks for retention on Dickison and creat an additional ~$3M in cap space. I'd prefer the previous trade over this one with 2nds going to PIT vs the #19.

No enough offense in the bottom six in my opinion. Pens need to support Sid and Geno more these days, and not rely on them so much. They should try to have the 4 line approach but 3 lines who can legit score and the 4th line to be physical, youth etc...

I saw it proposed by a B’s fan so I just went with it

EDM should be all over that, highly doubt Holland has the stones to accept his mistake regarding Campbell.

Hawks decline. Can't see them giving up a 3rd and Dickinson for some retention on Granny. Not even sure they take Granny to move up 5 spots.

No? He's been pretty quick to admit his mistakes in the past.

Boston does not take that deal, idc if a B's fan posted that, they get much better value for both players separately.

That EDM deal is terrible, and if the pens trade Granlund they're not retaining on him, buyout at that point.

Edmonton mistakes:
Athanasiou, yes (didn't qualify him rightfully so and moved on from a over priced qualifying offer)
JP, kinda (dealt him in season, could argue that they should have moved on in the summer when he had some value)
Kassian, no (played 2 full seasons on the terrible $3.2M deal)
Yamo, TBD
Nurse, TBD
Campbell, TBD

I'd say he could be better, but to each his own.
I'm sure the Detroit fans would argue that the last few seasons of Holland were full of mistakes that weren't admitted too or dealt with.

Signing Nurse was a mistake? I can't imagine the team without him. And Yamamoto earned that contract with a stellar 21-22 campaign. Holland's "mistake" was not knowing the future... pretty tough standard to hold a guy to.

The 2nd Bridge to Overpay on Nurse is Hollands mistake, fair that its not his fault we've been stuck with a flat cap since 2020. But thats one of a few mistakes

As for Yamo, I'm waiting for that shoe to drop before I render full judgement. In my opinion $3.1M x 2 was an overpayment (Jordan Kyrou signed $2.8M x 2) but I understand that he and JP were tied together and after signing JP to a $3.0M there was no way Yamo was going to come in under that number. If they buyout Yamo = massive fail, they need to get a pick or prospect back at a minimum.

Furthermore, last offseason was a mistake in my mind with regards to Yamo and JP, they needed to pick one and proceed. It would have maybe saved them a couple points on the overall cap hit and allowed them to go long term on Mcleod.
