The odds that the Pens sign none of the RFAs is exceedingly low

Compher will probably cost more. Don't really want him. Definitely don't want Bertuzzi, Graves, or Barbashev on those contracts.

Who would they bring back? It's only O'Connor and Poehling, and I don't like either lol

Why not? They are both solid bottom 6 pieces that should be cheap. I mean you don’t like DOC or Poehling but you thought “yeah I like the goaltending tandem of Korpisalo and DeSmith”?

I really like the idea of Bertuzzi and Malkin. Barbashev is a little overpaid, but his utility is why I think he's gonna get a competitive bidding war. Bertuzzi is gonna get close to a 5x5- comparable to Mccann's 5x5 signed this year. Didn't play much last year but had 60 in 62 in 21-22. Graves advanced stats were exceptional last year. He's going to get something similar to Oleksiak's deal a few years back imo.

Dubas gambled on Samsonov last year with a 1 year deal and it worked out. My description is "realistic? no. fun? yes." so do with that as you please.

Me neither, but I don't think Petry in Anaheim is the worst thing for them. Veteran defensemen in rebuilding years.

So you’d lose them for nothing? At least trade them for pucks or futures. You are running your team like Ron hextall just letting assets slip away for literally nothing

Ty smith, Poehling, and O’Conner all are valuable pieces that you just gave up

I read your description and it’s irrelevant to my comment. I didn’t say anything about realism. I asked how you could not like DOC or Poehling, but like the garbage goaltending lol.
And Dubas didn’t take a chance on Samsonov. Samsonov under 2 million was a low risk/high reward signing. Korpisalo on the other hand for almost 3 million with no one good behind him is high risk/low reward. So yeah, it’s just a garbage tandem and not sure why you’d like them, but not cheap bottom 6 players that fit Sully’s system.

Right? But no, let’s trade for Coimtos who gives you the same production as DOC or Poehling. But costs 1.3 million more and run with a 20 man roster lol

I'm not running the team. If you read the description, I highlight that I was not being realistic, but I was making an opening night roster worth something. I wasn't doing AHL work; Smith doesn't crack nhl opening night. O'Connor has shown promise in some advanced metrics, but what does he net in a sign and trade? A late pick? Same goes for Poehling.

He absolutley took a chance on Samsonov. What was the backup plan if he didn't pan out? Murray? Kallgen wasn't bad when he played, but still not NHL starter caliber. Korpisalo outperformed his contract last year on a "prove-it" deal with 2 teams under the league average in defensive metrics. I think with my defensive additions in Compher, Barbashev, and Graves, this team is a lot better defensively than last year. Plus, Carter on the wing gives him much less responsibility. Everyone else is going for Hill, Anderson, and Hellebuyck. I went a more interesting route.

LOL. Comtois has had a 33-point season, and while their advanced stats are fairly similar, Comtois created almost double the amount of dangerous chances DOC did last season, per MoneyPuck.

As for the 20 man roster comment, these salries could easily be adjusted to make room for 2-3 fringe starters. However, like I mentioned in the title, this is only the opening night lineup, not the entire roster.

No need for the Avs to waste a pick on O'Connor. Plenty of guys can the avs can target for cheap depth in free agency.

I like Bunting the best. I actually think he still has yet to reach his peak. Engvall next as a more cost-effective second or third line winger.

Think we should try and move Rutta to get a puck mover on the second pair, but all these signings are good.

Poehling has the most potential out of all our current younger guys I think. Super fast and has shown flashes of great talent.

That was like 3 years ago and he’s only had that 1 good season. He’s been meh since 🤦‍♂️.

Again he didn’t take a chance on Samsonov. Samsonov played well every season but maybe 1. And Murray is a better backup option than DeSmith. Korpisalo on the other hand has been terrible all but maybe 2 seasons.
Even if you want to claim the leafs took a chance on Samsonov/Murray, they were in a position where they could take that chance as the majority of their team is in their prime. The pens are old and just trying to win another cup before the core retires. They should in no way keep taking high risk chances because they don’t work out as well for an old team like the pens. Especially for that much.
