The shake up that can make sense

Description
I understand the value could be low on the Arizona deal. I have seen some reports the price for Schmaltz won’t be high because Arizona wants off the real money on his deal. Wasn’t really sure how many assets to add then, So let’s assume Toronto can get it done even if they have to add more, as long as it isn’t knies.
Really like these two guys for the leafs, will put the puck in the net and have reasonable cap hits and term so you know what you have for a few years.
Nylander for Lindholm I think could happen if both players can’t work out a new deal and would sign with their new team instead.
Resigning matthews and Lindholm next summer really makes the cap tight for that season but it can fit and once JTs deal is up the following year there will be more flexibility again.
I like orlov and soucy to reshape the defence a bit. And again signed for a few years so you got some cost certainty, if the cap actually goes up a lot the next few years these deals won’t be a problem, even as orlov declines.

But if he won’t resign who’s a better player they could trade him for? Assuming nylander would sign with Calgary.

Brodie for a single late pick maybe….otherwise Toronto will be retaining some of his contract.

Doesn't matter. We can easily get picks and prospects for Lindholm, since it sounds like Conroy is going to be going that route. IDK if it's rebuild or retool, but pending UFAs shouldn't be aquired by Calgary till players want to play here. Plus Nylander has no reason to extend here

Why would Calgary be interested in trading Lindholm for 1 player? He's 1C making less than 5M, that would be in such high demand around the league. Why would Nylander be any more inclined to sign an extension than Lindholm?

You can't compete with a player of Kadri's caliber as your 1C

Lol. Brodie is easily worth his contract. $5m aav is cheap for a top 4 defensive guy. I don’t get why Leaf fans are running him out of town, but other teams fans thinking they can get him for a late round pick or salary retained is hilarious

I get that. Usually have to assume a few facts to make these. Was just going with that Calgary would want to trade Lindholm for a 40 goal guy more than multiple pieces in return. And ya gotta assume nylander would sign there. I get it makes them weaker at centre but if they are forced to trade Lindholm that’s going to happen no matter what.
Nylander with Huberdeau would be pretty lethal I think.

Why would Nylander sign in Calgary? If he doesn't resign in TO, he's going to hit the open market.

Ya I was about to reply and say it’s crazy that he had a rough time in one series so now he’s worth nothing. Brodie and McCabe together didn’t allow one 5 on 5 goal against Tampa.
For me, not trying to run him out of town, would just prefer to go after orlov. Bit of asset management too if you can get some picks for Brodie and bring in orlov

You may have no choice but I don't see TO being at all a good trading partner. Nylander will sign with the leafs or test the open market. Marner won't resign there either. So why would Calgary trade for one of them only to see them leave as well. If you have to trade Lindholm and Hanafin and Toffoli it will be either at the deadline for futures or for younger players with upside.

Calgary isn't doing that and neither is Arizona. Getting rid of Murray's contract will almost cost a 1st round pick by it self. Are you getting Crouse and Schmaltz for a late 1st round pick + Robertson? Not even close.

Why? Why would TO even want to trade him? He's a good player still. I can see them moving him to find a different element but he's still a good player. He's the best defensive defenceman on the team still. Would other teams want him? Absolutely, because he is in fact still good and worth his contract. Jersey definitely could use a player like him, many teams would.

Matt Murray who needed a third and a 7th to be traded last season with 2 years in his deal, now needs a first to dump it? Mrazek with similar cap hit and 2 years cost moving back like 10 spots in the draft

Value may still be low yes but it’s not because Murray is there.

So what you are saying is we should be looking at a trade to get Lindholm at 50% retained as a rental.

Huberdeau could be lethal with Victor Olofsson if we are just talking about just offense.

Also you said it yourself, Calgary's center depth will take a huge fall if Lindholm leaves, not to mention Backlund will almost certainly go too in that scenario. Flames would be significantly better off selling and getting top 10 picks for 2-3 offseasons. LA didn't have Weegar comparable but they did rebuild quite well with a 30 year old Doughty making 11M and 32 year old Kopitar 10M. They also had way less valuable assets to sell off when they rebuilt

Maybe I don’t have the right read in what Calgary would want to do but what I would consider their core is a bit older so are they going for a rebuild with those guys on the cap sheet for many years? Feels more like a retool, of course this has to assume nylander would sign there, if he would I think that’s a great get for Calgary

So everyone has either forgotten about the Mrazek deal that set the market for goalies getting moved or just ignore it to fuel their desire to see the leafs burn. It will not cost as much to move Murray as it cost to move Mrazek. So no it will not cost a first. The best goalie on the market this summer is Jarry. Guess what he is, an inconsistent goalie who can't stay healthy. Murray is going to make less than he will next season and has won 2 cups and won't need a minimum of 3 years term. Murray is not going to be problematic to move.

That’s fair, I thought Calgary would be pushing to get back in the playoffs next year. Ya if they wanna try to a quick rebuild, they should retain money on those rentals and get as much picks as possible

You said Arizona wants to get off real money, why would they take Murray's contract then? He will get 6-million in real cash. You also ignored the fact that Ottawa retained money and that Murray has even worse Sv% this year than with Ottawa.

& why would moving Murray cost a 1st by itself? He has a cheap buyout and it’s only a 1 year contract. Those types of deals don’t cost a lot to move. It literally cost Ottawa only a 3rd and a 7th to move him and he had 2 years left on it. Yes they retained a bit, but how the hell does less term and less money make it cost more to move him? … just cause it’s Toronto. Lol.

Calgary is in a terrible position. One of the worst situations in the league. They have 4 major long term contracts for guys in their 30's (Markstrom only has 3 years left at least) and Coleman isn't a great contract either. They just missed the playoffs and have 2 guys wanting out already. In a couple years when Huberdeau, Kadri and Weegar really start taking steps back they will have 23.75 million tied up in long term anchors. They almost can't rebuild because those contracts are almost impossible to move. So hoping you can retool on the fly and have a good run or two is likely what they will do. It won't work but it's what they will do.

That's it, he's a leaf so the cost is 150% more on here.

Because Leafs are using NJD as a dumping ground here. I did not say Toronto would have to pay to move him…but the return will be muted when it’s cap-seeking deal.

That’s kind of why I thought getting nylander who could flirt with scoring 50 for a few years with Huberdeau wouldn’t be a bad idea for them. Sucks for them all their UFAs want out but not sure a full rebuild is doable. Gotta maximize the guys they have. Defence is still strong there, markstrom should have a better year, gotta score move, nylander helps.

Didn’t feel like it was dumping him on NJD. You guys lost severson, gonna lose graves too? Thought Brodie help bridge the cap while Hughes and nemec get used to the league
