Too many players I want to draft

Created by: Lancebmx
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 26, 2023
Published: Jun. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So many players I would like to draft on this first round. Trying to do whatever to get as many picks without selling off the whole team.

I know it's not realistic.

Still more than enough cap space for extensions next year as well.

#9 Leanord/ Moore
#11 Willander
#14 Barlow
#23 Honzek/ Bonk
#24 Sale
#28 Hrabal

Again I know it's not realistic but it's fun to dream

1.

  1. Murray, Matt
  2. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
TOR
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (VAN)
2.
DET
  1. Gauthier, Taylor
  2. Granlund, Mikael
  3. Petry, Jeff
  4. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Petry who is okay but slowing down. Granlund who was not good in Pittsburgh. Goalie prospect since we don't have many.

Dubas thinks buyouts are a last resort type of thing. Pens don't necessarily need the cap space that badly but could utilize the extra space to improve their team.

#14 overall
PIT
  1. Chiarot, Ben ($2,375,000 retained)
  2. Kubalik, Dominik
  3. Mastrosimone, Robert [Reserve List]
  4. 2024 4th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Cap space plus serviceable inexpensive players. Decent prospect that could be in the team late this year or next year. He doesn't plan to sign in Detroit and was a Pens fan growing up so likely to sign there. Didn't give him much value just a little sweetener getting his negotiating rights.
3.

Eventually, think they start now or give it a last go or two? They should start now but I think they try for it in the last few years.

Pens definitely don't need another D-man in his 30's with a NTC

Cause he's not me obviously. Or maybe this is his plan? I guess we find out on Wednesday.

This would be worse for NSH than the last time they were involved in a Karlsson trade.

These GMs better wake up and do something. It feels like it's been more dead than usual so far this offseason.

Just starting to get going here. I think this cap really has them restricted.

Also seems there are a lot of teams that should be fully rebuilding and just want to "Re-Tool." Re-tooling is usually an unequivocal failure and just postpones the rebuild. But rebuilding teams just unload all useful assets on roster for futures and more trades would come from that. Re-tooling teams usually want hockey trades and those are much harder to do.

I think some of those retool teams like Winnipeg and Calgary might have financial reasons to try and keep it going. Sometimes the business side interferes for the smaller market teams that we don't see. I remember, this was like 10 years ago or something, I read an article saying that the Sharks needed to make the second round of playoffs just to be profitable. Now obviously things change but I think there is more of that than we know. Also the COVID season and all that stuff would have affected even the stronger financial teams. I did do some light reading into the Sharks actually on Forbes and they were a team that was hurt hard. Teams that rebuild usually lose immediate support so if they are still trying to recover from those years they need people in those seats spending money.

Really though at 2.375M it's not a hard pill to swallow. I actually got quite a bit of positive feedback when I first proposed this trade from as bunch of Pens fans.

Also Dubas hates buyouts and will avoid them at all costs. His words as well, just read that the other day but I can't remember where.

We already have 9 NHL defensemen on the roster. It's not that I don't like the trade idea, we just need a different player than Chiarot.

No doubt from an ownership perspective it is a much wiser use of funds to hope for a Florida like Cinderella postseason from a pretender rather than a total rebuild that optimistically takes at least half a decade to turn around.

Swapping Petry for Chiarot still equals too many D. If we take on a D-man, it will be someone waiver exempt or a #2 guy like Hanafin. It will not be a 3rd pairing D-man who is over 30 with trade protection who was a -31. Sorry, but that's just reality.

Yeah we ain’t doing none of those trades but it would be dope - Have some fun with this draft simulator…

https://draftprospectshockey.com/draftsim/#/

I’m mentally preparing myself for disappointment on Wednesday. I hope we don’t trade up and I hope we don’t trade 1st rounders for NHL players.

There are so many players in the top 50 of this draft that I would be thrilled with. If anything I want us to move down and get more 1st & 2nd rounders.
