Description
I saw a Leafs ACGM with a Miller for Nylander one for one. Canucks fans in the comment were saying that they should not do this deal, but I think that is a steal for Vancouver. The conversation had me curious if it was possible to build a competitive team without Miller as the 2C, this is what I came up with. Keep in mind that the cap dump trades can be any team, and the UFA salaries may be a little cheaper or more expensive. Bear should return by January next year, and he would then replace Myers in the lineup.

Canucks draft Benson if he is available. If he is gone, take the best player that falls. If not, take SImashev.

The Hawks aren't interested in that deal. Hall was worth it. Garland...not Hall.

Miller is worth more and does bring more to the table then Nylander. You have 3 very similar players in kuzy, Nylander and Boeser. Is Nylander a better scorer than the other two i think its debatable between him and Kuz. Also I'm not a big fan of Compher I think his offensive ability is getting looked on favorably when he's been in a mostly protected spot in Colorado at 5m I think whoever signs him is going to regret it.

That's true, that could go to any team looking to reach the cap floor. I do not think that Van would be opposed to parting with a mid round pick to make it happen either.

I think it would be wise move for Chicago. Pearson could be potentially flipped at the deadline. Garland is solid all around and could be moved for assets.

There is no world where Miller is worth more than Nylander. Nylander is younger, similar offensively, much better defensively, and will be on a much better contract. Nylander adds much needed speed into the top six, and you can never have too many guys who can put the puck in the net. I agree that Compher is not worth 5 million, but I believe that a combination of him and Rodrigues and provide apt secondary scoring and positive defensive results.

Plus Garland and Hall would be perfect distributors for Bedard's rookie year IMO

Pearson is working on coming back. Seems like trading for hopes. I don't mind taking Garland, but Cap Space is worth more than gold right now. All these RFAs signing league minimums...it's rough out there right now.

Chicago will be $30m under the cap with 16 roster players with Bedard. I see little potential for them running out of cap space.

But that doesn't mean give it away for free. Even Kyle Davidson himself said they'll easily get to the cap floor. It's a non issue.

Miller has more value because he can play C, is physical, and signed long term.

Nylander is a UFA and will sign for more than Miller at that time even if they re-signed him.

I'm telling you this would be the opposite of giving it away for free. Chicago is practically guaranteed to win this trade. If Garland is good with them they'll get a 2nd and 3rd easily at the TDL this year. Unless they have definite deals to weaponized their cap space this is about as safe of a bet as it gets.

I'm not a fan of either team. Miller has the center advantage and that is it. He is three years older and his contract is largely viewed as a liability given the length and movement protections. Also physical forwards tend to age decline much worse. And Nylander has been substantially more consistent producing at ES. Unless Nylander is extended at an outrageous amount, I would take Nylander hands down over Miller.

I actually like Garland and I know he was good in AZ. It's just a unnecessary risk.

I think it is a good trade for both teams for different reasons. I wonder how a TJ brodie trade for BB or AB would work. Not interested in Garlands contract

Yeah I think both teams gain from the move, especially if Nylander signs long term. I personally do not see room on the team for Brodie and his cap hit, but AB for Brodie and a mid round pick would def be something to look at.

This trade would be terrible for the Leafs because once Miller falls off or starts getting injured, they won't have much talent that will supplement that. They also already have Tavares as their 2C, and while putting him on the wing might help them get more out of him, that probably doesn't happen without Nylander or Marner on the other wing. Tavares-Miller-Järnkrok is probably going to kead into a dip in production for all 3.

This trade for Vancouver would be great, especially if they can retain Nylander. Personally, I don't think it's the end if Miller's contract becomes an albatross in Vancouver, as long as it's after year 3 and that Pettersen is getting paid like 10M and not 12M+. However, I think Nylander in an elevated role could produce 90+ consistently, the caveat is that he probably costs Vancouver 10M.

It may be manageable even if the core ends up being Pettersen 10M, Nylander 10M, Hughes 10M, Kuzmenko 8M, Boeser 7M, Hronek 6.5M Demko/goaltending 8M (~65% of the cap on 7/8 players)

Miller and Tavares Would def need to be separate since they play fairly similar styles. I’d estimate that Nylander would sign under 9. As long as Miller does not fall off a cliff and continues to be at least a decent 2nd liner, his contract will be manageable. By the end of his contract, the cap will have gone up substantially, and 8 will likely be the standard for quality 2nd line players. Boeser will either walk or take a significant pay cut, so that will give the Canucks a little more breathing room. I like the idea for both teams because it seems necessary to shake up the core, whilst also maintaining a competitive roster. I think a Miller + Mcdonough + a 3rd for Nylander with an extension could be a fine move if Treliving gets desperate.

Miller is idiotically used as a scapegoat by stupid reporters and know it all fans in van. There is like 6 guys who they could’ve been calling for the heads of before him.

Brian Burke said in his book that fans in Canada and van especially turn on players as soon as they get paid. It’s facts for miller

If Nylander is asking for less than 9, he's definitely signed. In Toronto, I could see him ask for anywhere between 9-11M, I don't think he goes much less in Vancouver but if Pettersen is getting 10M, maybe he goes for 9M.

If the Leafs just do this to make a change, I don't think the results will be favourable, not in the short term, nor in the long-term.

Idk... Maybe CHI has to get over or close to the floor, before people quit this narrative that getting to the floor is an issue. At which point they can start leveraging their cap space more, potentially. But so far, it doesn't look like the prediction that "cap space is worth more than gold" is proving to be true. Maybe we just haven't seen those flood gates open yet, though.

Hawks probably consider this without Pearson in the deal. His status is just too much of an unknown.

How do you mean it's not proving true? LAK only dumped $1.8M in cap (depending on how you feel about Walker) and gave up a 2nd round pick and a pretty decent prospect to dump $1.8M in cap. NSH just ate 50% of RyJo and traded him away for free. THall is a good player and while I personally do like Mitchell/Regula and think management specifically didn't develop Mitchell correctly...they know better than I do. If they were going to continue to make him a healthy scratch...then do HIM a favor and give him a change of scenery.

Idk about all of that. Looks to me like LAK paid Grans and a late 2nd for $5.625M in cap space. Which is still a tough price, but pretty standard and fair. At full price, RyJo probably would've cost NSH something significant to move out his contract and COL is bargain hunting banking on him performing better with them. So, retaining and moving him for nothing balances out. Hall is not quite a negative asset and will benefit CHI in a lot of ways, but he is no star anymore, although he certainly could have a resurgence. Mitchell and Regula definitely don't have much trade value. I guess I just thought we'd be seeing a lot more cap dumps going on and a lot higher prices being paid. But there is still plenty of time.

For LAK it does all depend on how you feel about Walker. His $2.65M is simply an unknown. Hard to quantify in the grand scheme. As for Peterson, he was in the AHL all last year and can be sent back next year. That cap hit was/is only $3.85M. LAK ate 2 years of Provy's contract to the tune of $2.025M. That delta is only $1.8M in cap. With that said....the LAK don't participate in any of the signing bonuses. They do save a ton of cash, but not a lot of cap space.

LA knew what they were doing moving Walker. He certainly wasn't a positive asset. At the very least you call him a cap casualty, I know PHI isn't likely to view him as a positive acquisition or part of their future. The guy has an almost $3M cap hit, is gonna be 29 years old this year, is a 5'11" dman, averages 14 minutes a night, and has never had a positive goal differential in his low scoring NHL career. I don't think it's too hard to see what he is. So they clear $625k between moving him and retaining on Proverov. Then add in Petersen's buried penalty of $3.85M and LAK free's up about $4.5M in cap space. They aren't likely to be done yet either. It's certainly nothing to sneeze at, but it isn't an insane amount in my opinion.
