Leafs Pull Off 3 Way Deal With Sharks And Ducks Involving Nylander

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 29, 2023
Published: Jun. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs acquire Karlsson at 9 million.

Ducks acquire Nylander with extension attached, 9.5 million x 8.

Sharks get Drysdale, picks and prospects from Anaheim.

Why do all three teams do this?

Ducks pair Nylander with their new Swedish center. Sharks continue their rebuild and move Karlsson when he is at his highest value. And the Leafs get back the best return in a Nylander trade that's out there.

Anaheim loses their future 1RD in this proposal, doesn't really make sense. If they want Nylander, they should be trading Terry for him.

SJ is getting too much of a favorable trade for Karlsson at 9M. He's a 9M defender, and they are only getting one major piece but to me it seems too convenient.

The Ducks aren't ready to add a $9.5m x 8 contract. They are a couple years away from being competitive. Doubt Nylander would want to go to the worst team in the league that's rebuilding either

I guess the question would be, Do the Leafs prefer Nylander for one year and then have cap space instead next summer instead of a 9m Karllson for four years.
Same with Ducks, would they prefer keep Drysdale, the picks and have 9m in cap instead of 9m Nylander.

Is it just me, but is 9.5m X 8 Nylander a good deal for a player starting that contract at age 28.?

I agree. I don't think San Jose is getting that great of a return. And I'm not certain Nylander fits with Anaheim's timeline either (but good work on thinking outside the box).

I'll be honest, I hate this forward group. Lots of risk if Knies doesn't look great out of the gate and Brown has lost a step. You're going to end up with teams loading up against Matthews/Marner and that second line might not be able to make teams pay.

I see no reason to add Zadorov. You end up moving Brodie and Timmins to add him. Not good asset management.

The leafs don't get back "the best return that is out there" for Nylander, because this deal isn't on the table.

The thing Anaheim needs is RHD, much more than we need Nylander. We'll throw our hat in the ring to bid for him when he hits the UFA market.

With how hard it is to move salary in the NHL right now I bet Nylander stays. I realize you don't want to lose a guy like him for nothing, but if you resign Matthews and are able to give Nylander a respectable offer (and he still goes elsewhere) what do you do? At least you get the value of him this year.

Sorry, teams lose players all the time for "nothing" as UFAs. It's a new phenomenon on CapFriendly, upcoming UFA HAVE to be traded for something. There are 100 UFAs a year. Gee, I take a look at the Leafs they signed Samsonov, Brodie, Bunting, Tavares, Jarnkrok, Kampf as UFAs and never gave up anything for them
I really don't think it makes sense for the Ducks. They're the team in the post that gives up the most, They can keep Drysdale, the two picks and spend that 9m on any UFA, instead of in effect trading for Nylander.

Well probably still spend that 9 million on Nylander, even with the cap jump I have a difficult time believing he gets significantly more than 9.5.

I think teams have learned you cant overpay players if you want a competitive team. Time Meier is up there as far as scoring wingers go, doesn't have the same soft connotations, and just sign for less than 9.

In the mean time, Drysdale is staying, not going to San Jose.

Yeah, you quoted me before I could edit, what I meant was they are getting too convenient of a deal. I presume that SJ isn't getting the kind of return a top pairing Norris caliber RHD OFD would fetch especially with minimal retention. So, with that in mind I think the a reduced value quantity package (Liljegren+a 1st+...) is more likely than a reduced value quality package (Drysdale+...) especially when you factor in the potential destinations.

I think if Anaheim acquires Nylander, what they are willing to pay him really depends on what Zegras, Drysdale, etc...get on long-term extension. If they can sign then to long-term low cap hits, maybe they can average it out. Although, that would likely mean Zegras needs to sign in the 7s which I don't really see happening.

That being said someone will pay Nylander whether or not it's the Leafs (or the Ducks). He doesn't have the physicality aspect that Meier has but he's better and he does have a great active stick that leads to scoring chances.

Users do typically over emphasize the aspect of asset management on capfriendly, but in the case of Nylander where he doesn't play a premium position, he's not the top player on the team, and the situation of the Leafs' roster and depth chart (few long-term contracts, aging dcore, thin prospect pool, etc...). I do think the Leafs should try to move him (to a playoff team missing a scoring winger/retooling team) if they don't sign him.

Trading Nylander for a decent return and picking up Karlsson would be a decent move but only of they are saving at least a couple of mil. Otherwise, I think the Leafs are better off paying Nylander 10Mx8 than Karlsson 9Mx4 since that's just giving them a 2-4 year window since all of Marner, Tavares, Matthews (assuming he extends for 3), and Karlsson's contracts will expire in that time. While the first two could re-sign, I imagine Matthews walks and Karlsson retires or just isn't effective anymore, and the team will be in need of a 1C, 2C (probably happens regardless), and a 1RD.
