Just because 2 players were drafted in the same position it does not mean they hold the same or similar value

I mean he just cleared waivers, so you're going to be eating that cap space anyways if he goes to the minors with that contract. This is actually not a bad move for zadina.
I'd make it a 5th though.
I also dont do that MTL move.

Detroit is not wasting their second retention slot (for multiple years) to eat that small of a hit and get a nothing return.

Teams will have another free attempt when he goes back on waivers the next time.

That's fine but we aren't retaining for 2 seasons on Zadina.

Can someone please tell me the rules when you claim a player off of waivers? Because there is a very good reason no one claimed him?

Well considering he just cleared waivers, I think you should take what you can get.

Or hold on to him and pray.

Team that claims a player off waivers has to take the entire contract, and the player can't be sent down to the minors or he goes back to the team who put him on waivers.

I did think a team like pittsburg would claim him, try him as a reclamation project with crosby, but they dont have the cap for it obviously.

You're talking 2 seasons of 400k. You're not spending to the cap currently, and you get a different long shot prospect.
The pick is minimal.

But if you attempt to buy him out the following year you pay more than 400k AND you lose more than that over 2 years.
And considering he cleared waivers, you're not losing cap space on something like that.

Or Detroit can just bury him in the minors, and hope he improves. Or he is a call up with injuries. His cap hit doesn't hurt the Wings as you pointed out. That second retention slot is more valuable when the Wings are dealing a Perron/Kubalik/etc. at the TDL.

And as I pointed out, you can't bury 100% of his salary in the minors. You would be left with more than 750k in cap space on the books if he's in the minors.
Thus retaining 400k technically free's up 350k for 2 years.
You're allowed 3 retention spots, but yes they are valuable.

Then they'd have to keep him on the roster and I don't think Zadina is good enough to take up a roster spot this early in the season. That why he wasn't claimed and it's not uncommon for a player to clear waivers and the get traded. Without the restrictions of a player claimed off of waivers.
