Summer of Brad

Created by: SpankyGeezus
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 6, 2023
Published: Jul. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Saros, Juuse
  2. Tomasino, Philip
  3. 2025 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
TOR gets a top 5 goalie in the NHL and a young skilled winger who should flourish playing with the Leafs top 6 talent. NSH gets the better players in the deal (as of right now), so they send their second 1st rounder in 2025 in exchange for a 2024 3rd.
NSH
  1. Nylander, William
  2. Samsonov, Ilya [RFA Rights]
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Nylander is a sign and trade so NSH can get the 8th year; 8 x 9,000,000. Samsonov gives them someone reliable with upside until Askarov is ready for full time duty.
2.
TOR
  1. Laughton, Scott
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Leafs flip the 2025 1st acquired in the Nylander deal for Laughton who provides everything the Leafs need in a middle 6 C. Added value in the fact that Laughton is under team control for 3 years at a modest 3,000,000 cap hit.
PHI
  1. Robertson, Nicholas
  2. 2025 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
PHI gets a young prospect in Robertson who could use opportunity elsewhere. He has been linked to PHI in the past and could really click under the right circumstance.

Nashville isn't moving Saros, Tomasino, and a first for Nylander. Getting rid of Saros makes Nashville significantly worse, and Sammy is a mediocre goalie that got held up by a good team. Also, Nylander apparently wants 10. Doubt Trotz is brining him in to pay him more than our captain.

Also add in, a beyond his best by date ROR and slew of support casts 2-4Cs Glass, Novak, and Parssinen pale in comparison to AM and Taveres. Nylanders production will not be sustainable and that contract will become an absolute albatross

Flyers have literally turned down a better offer for Laughton than this why would they accept this?

This is the thinking of every leaf fans on here. Our goalies have good results because the team lifts them up, but at the same time our defence is crap and none of our forwards can play d. Makes sense. Samsonov had better stats than Soros so what you are saying is pretty false.

Lol Samsonov had a better season than Saros and goalies never get half the return as elite forwards do. This is a pass for TO. Totally needless.

Better goals against average, but same sv percentage. In no way am I suggesting he's better than Saros but he's definitely far better than mediocre. If he is then TO's defence is next level, it can't be both ways.

Well yeah, it's easy to have a good season when Toronto was one of the best defensive teams last season. Glad he performed so well just to get stretched open in the playoffs lol.

Nylander would come here, get 10m, then have a massive production dip because the supporting cast wouldn't be anywhere near as good Matthews, Marner, and Tavares.

But hey, It's not like I wanna be here. The Saros for Nylander trades are pretty common amongst leaf fans.

"Samsonov had a similar GAA and SV% while playing 20 less games than Saros while on a much better team. This is also only the 2nd season with Samsanov starting the majority (barely) of games and only the first 1 with good results. Top proven starters in the prime are never traded so there are no real trade comparisons"

Fixed it for you.

Glad I put that guy you're all quoting on ignore months ago. Some classic "if Marcel Dionne is better than Pat Maroon, why does Maroon have more Cups?" logic.

RipNasty knows the NHL better than all 32 GM's didn't you know? He is professionally certified in telling people to "check the stats", especially when it surrounds his beloved Leafs.

I am not saying Saros isn't good, or that Samsonov is better. However, Nylander is worth more than Saros. Star forwards always are. It's a fact.

Games played has a pretty big gap and caliber of team in front does play a factor. Sammy is a good goalie, with the right backup/tandem.

They turned down an offer for 25th or 29th OA and a 2nd from Blues for Laughton. Why would they make a trade that is quite literally way worse than that for him now?

I agree which is why this trade makes no sense. We don't need a goalie and Nylander is worth too much.

Call the first rounders equivalent. I'd think Robertson has more value than a late second for sure.

Players are worth whatever a GM is willing to pay. I wouldve never figured Tanner Jeannot would get an entire draft worth of picks.

Uh how about we don’t? 2023 was one of the deepest draft in decades lol the 2023 1st is not even close to the same as what the 2025 1st will be and I would rather take a 2nd than a guy who can’t stay on the ice. Robertson has no value if he can’t actually play.

Depends on what gms think of his supposed 10 million dollar contract ask. Trotz has said he doesnt like the 7 and 8 year contracts. Nylander supposedly wants to be on a contender which nashville isnt and he also supposedly wants a big fat long contract. So to Trotz i dont think he would really consider him.

But there are decent trade comps, meier garnered a 1st, a 2nd that can become a 1st if NJD make it to ECF next year, a 7th, 2 d prospects and a wing prospect (value is in the eye of the beholder here).

So id say a 1st, a 2nd with a small chance of becoming another 1st and if it does it is very late, then a mixed bag of prospects ranging B+ to B-/more 2nds/young roster players (dealers choice).
