Why? Petry can still play and they would get a medium 2nd and high 3rd to eat 2MM of Karl.

I think it is close to fair.

Though TBH, I don't see the Pens or Canes meeting the asking price for Karl.

Sharks biggest need is Goalie prospect, would think the sticking point would be them wanting someone like Blomqvist over Joseph or Poulin.
Other than that the value is close to what I think sharks have to settle with.

Karlsson’s contract is pretty long. No team is gonna eat that many cap space for only a second and a third. And Petry is a cap dump

It's not even close for Detroit, this is the worst offer and wherever the rumor came from is completely BS and not even worth making this post for

At some point the retention will have to go up and the value down. But a 1st and a good Goalie prospect would be my requirements.

You know, I did hear something like that on the radio today. Though I still think they want the young Dman.
Maybe Blom over Poulin... Changing terms now.

Think the 3rd party is going to be hard. Sharks won’t retain more than 3.5 but petry and the 2nd to SJ wouldn’t be off the table.

I don't think Petry wants to go to SJ. I think that's the hold up.

To be fair to the contributors, I was guessing on the value for the trade to Det. The rumors were:
SJ wants a 1st, a goalie prospect, a (NHL ready) young forward or dman.
SJ will only eat 2MM max
    Petry won't go to SJ
Det would take Petry and eat salary for a cost

I’ve thought that too! Could swap to Granlund since he doesn’t have trade protection but you bought him out here. Moving Karlsson is going to be tough but your GM really wants him bad!

You would have to attach a first round pick to the Detroit trade to make it worth it for us. 2M or so for 4 years would be two seconds or a first. Taking Petry is pretty much the value you have there since we don't even have a roster spot open.

    Heh. It's not 2M, it's 8M. Four years x 2M = 8M. Nobody is doing that for a deferred 2nd and 3rd.

And Petry is a cap dump to San Jose. They will not be contending any time soon, so that's no more than a 12.5M favor to Pittsburgh.

Even if Granlund was traded to SJ, Petry would have to get moved. Unless, SJ offered to take Carter and buy him out on top of taking Granlund...

I suppose I don't see Petry as a cap dump. He is overpaid by about 1.5MM but he is a good player. He was top 50 - 100 in the league in nearly every defensive stat. He just had little to no offense these last two years.

Still, you're entitled to your opinions.

Detroit passes, If we wanted Petry we would've traded for him when he was in Montreal. We've zero room for him.

Only rumor is Karlsson potentially going to Pittsburgh. Detroit isn't retaining $8,000,000 on Karlsson for 4 seasons plus taking on cap dump Jeff Petry on top of it. When we're going to need to sign both Raymond and Seider for a combined close to $16,000,000 next summer.

That could be a consideration. Like I said lots of moving parts but at the end of the day Karlsson in means Perty out, no point in spending that much on 3 RD, especially when Karlsson and Letang eat up 46-48 min a game.

We don't have a roster spot for him unless we scratch Chiarot, which I'm not opposed to, but means we have a 5M player on the bench. Considering how trade protection and the teams that can afford him, basically no other option to move him to. You need to move him for cap purposes. These all mean he is a cap dump to Detroit. Also acquiring all this cap would very limit any other potential move for us as we would have liked cap space. It's not really an opinion, just the reality of the situation you presented.

Are you totally out of your mind?

A 4 year retention of 2 million a pop will cost you four 2nd round picks or two 1st rounders. Dumping 12 million in cap in Petry on us will cost you another two 1st round picks.

Detroit doesn't exist solely to do you favours.
