Actually they aren’t. He’s the best rental they could possibly find for a run and there’s no chance they can come close to replacing him in a deal. He either signs or walks. There’s no trade happening. Leafs have their hands tied trying to win a cup and moving him isn’t going to win a cup.

I concur. A somewhat similar circumstance for the Leafs (as opposed to the Rangers) for slightly different reasons in my view.

The best chance at winning a SC is having a consistently competitive team. Going all in for one year, when Matthews, Marner, and Rielly are all under 30 is idiotic. Trading Nylander is a far superior option to keeping him and allowing him to leave in UFA.

That’s unfortunately what teams do when they have a real chance. You’ll see

Tre did it in CGY too lol

Yeah and it blew up on him and is likely the biggest reason he isn't there anymore.

Rangers have no interest in Nylander and especially have no reason to trade their entire future away for a rental.

That’s false. He wasn’t fired. You’re looking at it from a fans point of view. If you move Nylander it will make the team weaker, and the development of the picks coming back won’t be relevant till the other stars have walked. Unless you actually believe that the trade above could actually happen(it isn’t even a possibility). Imagine Kubalik, 1st, 2nd, better prospect that what OTT got. Moving forward with that to try and win a cup. Yikes

Or they get a return like Dubois which could strengthen the overall team. But that would conflict with your predetermined conclusion wouldn't it?

PLD is worth more. But ya, mangiapane +1st +3rd and prospect is a good return. I’m not sure anyone trying to win a cup wants to downgrade like this, like OTT or WPG just did

"that deal will likely include a first round pick". So it's not even a guarantee that the Canes will get a first

“That deal will likely include a first round pick” to me sounds like it would be a package with a 1st rounder and other pieces

Rangers are not giving up Laffy and Kakko for a rental

I would think Nylander would be more than happy to extend with NYR. Affording him might be an issue but he almost definitely would be willing.

Meaning, we are not overpaying him. Of course he would sign here lol. You're just stoking the fire with your trigger finger responding
