Isles can't afford 8x$9.15M next summer - even if you subtract JGP's $5M AAV, they still only have about $9.9M in cap space with 18 guys under contract. Adding Nylander at $9M means they basically have enough cap space to run a 20-man roster all season.

Ship Palmieri to a third party like Anaheim, switch the 2024 1st to a 2025 1st and I think you do it. Isles can’t afford to move JGP, but if they could go with

Engvall-Nelson-Nylander

Then you gotta do it imo. That’s a legit top six.

So Ottawa rejected this offer for a worse player and they had less leverage but the Leafs should move Nylander for the package?

My problem is that while the top 6 would be better, the rest of the team is much, much worse.

If this trade above is the package (which feels light, IMO), the Islanders send out:
-JG Pageau
-Oliver Wahlstrom
-Kyle Palmieri
-2025 1st
-2024 2nd
-2025 2nd (presumed cost of dumping the 1x$5M left on Palmieri's deal next summer)

That's 3 top-9 forwards and 3 premium picks for Nylander. He's a very, very good player, and I don't discount that, but part of the issue with the trades Lou has made over the years is that there's almost no depth to backfill the roster with these moves.

What's your 3rd line after this trade? Fasching - Cizikas - Gauthier? With a 4th line of Martin - Koivula - Clutterbuck? You better hope you can get 40 minutes a night out of the top 6 because that bottom 6 is a wasteland now.

This was the better offer. Also, it looked like Debrincat only wanted to sign in Detroit so I guess Dorion can't be blamed.

I really would prefer to not be saddled by Pageau's contract if we move Nylander. Wouldn't take him for free at 5x3 actually. This is a pretty underwhelming package.

He's a playoff performer. And the Leafs need a 3C because Kampf is more suited for the fourth line. 5 million is a bit rich but the Leafs can afford it.

this is still a bad package for nylander with an extension, I'll pay Nylander 4M more than Pageau all day
