Taking a step back to move forward

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 16, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A trade like this might make sense at this point. I like Garland, but the glut of wingers on the roster and the rumours that Allvin has been unsuccessfully shopping him for a while point to the lack of trade value for wingers.

If CHI actually wants to start improving their roster (and they should to help insulate Bedard) they might be interested in something like this. For VAN, Johnson's not an ideal target by any means but he fills a role temporarily. Most importantly the deal will open valuable cap space to go after better 3C and D targets next season.
Trades
VAN
  1. Johnson, Tyler
Additional Details:
VAN gets a stop-gap 3C for the year and future cap space.
CHI
  1. Garland, Conor
Additional Details:
CHI gets the better player on a reasonable contract to start building back up around Bedard.

The Canucks shouldn’t feel pressured to dump Garland due to cap constraints. They would be much better off trading Beau for a 3C with term like Dvorak and seeing what the team looks like with three quality centers.

That is another way to go for sure. The problem is the lack of decent C options with term available on the trade market. I'm not huge on Dvorak being the answer to their needs.

I get that, but I do think he’s an option worth considering.

You do realize we can't afford a guy like Tyler Johnston.
Do you think he is a good fit for the Canuck's roster?

Hawks probably decline. Can't imagine they take those two extra years on Garland's deal for nothing.

Garland's actually a good player though, so it's not 'nothing' if they want to start surrounding Bedard with better players.

I just did it (see cap-compliant roster above).
As for your question; probably not. But if he can provide even moderate value in a bottom 3C or 4C role it might be worth it just to free up the cap space next year.

This would hurt a bit if this is where Garland's value is seen around the league. Just another kick from the Jimmy B era. I'd Garland play up with JT and Boeser. While Aman gets a chance to center some more offensively talented guys like Beau and Hog. And Hog gets a chance to show he can be effective at both ends of the ice knowing Beau and Aman are solid on the forecheck and the line would carry that responsibility as well.

Sure Garland is fine. But calling him "the better player" is a stretch. TJ is still great when healthy, and he plays all forward positions well and can win faceoffs. The consistently healthier player might be more accurate, but that has more to do with age and wear and tear than anything. Also, Johnson supposedly brings a lot of elements to the rebuild that CHI likes, as far as culture and work ethic, etc. I think they would be more concerned about the term of Garlands contract than getting a "better" player anyway.

Agree with this. I would rather have the $5 mil in cap space the following two years to spend elsewhere than have Garland.
