The Skjei/Pesce pairing was deployed as a true shutdown line over the past two seasons. I’ve seen so many ‘analytics’ takes on here about their poor numbers last season.

Pesce is a superior player to Brodie in every category. Shut down defense, better offensively, is a righty who can play the left side (more valuable than a lefty who can play the right).

He could be on a top line, but he's not in any way a top defender. He's a secondary player who doesn't impact the game play half as much as you guys think he does. Pesce is a good player but he's far from elite and does not in any way match Nylander.

Carolina's system makes Pesce look terrific. He's good but he's not some super star elite defenceman. He's a good 2nd pair guy and a secondary player.

Brodie is about as good as it gets defensively (not sure many, if any, are better); he contributes very little offensively (true), but on the Leafs with Reilly & Klingberg - offense not the concern 😅, we need defenders

The proof is in the real statistics, and not the advanced metrics. If brodie had 26 takeaways to pesces 60 and 1 more blocked shot. You can make advanced statistics say anything you want if you tweak them just right
