Can we agree on Broberg

Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 8, 2023
Published: Aug. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Listen, lots of Oil fans laugh at me for opining this, but I rly think Broberg is going to bust.
I think they'd be lucky to move him for a 2d rd pick at this point. His growth and adv stats/metrics are just not what we expected. He should be moved before its too late. He won't get you a 1st, no way

His growth and adv stats/metrics are just not what we expected.

Support this statement of yours. What stats are you basing this on? What did you expect of him? Did you expect a 20 yr old Dman to produce a point/game in the AHL in '21-'22 (he produced 23 pts in 31 games)? Did you expect a 21 yr old Dman to take/hold a top-4 spot in his rookie year alongside either Barrie or Bouchard last year (prior to Ekholm's acquisition)? There are valid points of concern to raise, but the one's I'm familiar with don't paint such a doom-and-gloom picture as you seem to see.

I take issue with assertions like this one because they're so deeply embedded in the instant gratification mindset. If a player isn't a top-4 Dman in his rookie year, he's a valueless bust that needs to be moved on from ASAP. Just because we spent a decade drafting at the top of the draft doesn't mean that every player follows the development curve of the elite players. Plenty of good-to-great NHLers develop incrementally by making consistent year-over-year progress which, I'll point out, is exactly what Broberg has done. As of now, he appears to be perfectly on track to emerge as at least a strong bottom pairing Dman this year (a Broberg-Kulak 3rd pairing) and continue improving as he has done up till now. If the team can lock him up at a cheap rate with some term (1.5 to 2.25mil for as long they can get him), he'd be set up to emerge as a top-4 Dman on exactly the kind of value contract the team needs in order to optimise their competitive window.

No. The author of this AGM isn't an Oilers fan and seems to have a very warped sense of player development and value. Even if Broberg were to never become more than a bottom pairing Dman, a young bottom pairing Dman with his combination of size and skating is worth more than a 3rd from a contender.

Fair points but and this is every fan base over values their players. Besides no a 3rd pairing guy doesn't get as much as you think . Have an awesome day.

I see people making this claim a lot - that his ceiling is a 3rd pairing defenseman. Which is crazy, because he played 3rd pairing as a 21 year old and finished with a 58.65 xGF% and a 59.13 HDCF%. Do they really think he's fully developed already? Of course not. It just doesn't add up, so the only reasonable answer is hate and/or jealousy.

A 6'3, 200 lbs defenseman who skates like the wind and put up a 58.65 xGF% as a 21-year-old? Total bust.

tears of joy

When said 3rd pairing Dman is 22 years old, I firmly believe that he does. Anyone thinking said player would be fully developed at that point wouldn't deserve their title as a GM/scout and any team acquiring him would do so under the belief that he can be a quality player under their system/tutelage. As such, I firmly believe that any contending team would both have to and would be willing to give more than a very low 3rd- regardless of whether it's Broberg or a young Dman from another team.

Regardless of if you agree or disagree, I wish you the same in return smile

As late as his 23-year-old year (his fourth season), Tage Thompson WAS a bust.

There are 31 GMs around the league who would be only too happy to take Broberg off your hands.
