Avs do need some more offense in the bottom 6, but not at the cost of losing a good defensive forward.

From a value standpoint, the Avs might get the better end here. However, I'm still not sure they accept, as they are shaping their bottom six in a way that makes Kubalik a poor fit. I also think they need to be very selective on what is most likely going to be their final addition at forward. Kubalik likely isn't the guy they will say is the missing piece.

Not a bad proposal though. I could be wrong in my assessment above.

A decent waivers exempt forward would suffice in that case

I think the value here favors Colorado, but I also would be very surprised if the Avs moved LOC. He’s a bottom 6 guy with a hard ceiling, but the org seems to love him an outsized amount.

Very interesting trade with good value from both teams. I think the term of Oconnors deal is too good for the Avs to trade

The Avs certainly have the cap to do it, but I'm not sure it's a good move for them to give up LOC. Don't get me wrong he's not irreplaceable but LOC fits the bill for what the Avs need at 4RW and Kubalik would maybe fit the bill at 3RW and able to move up the order if there are injuries (or possibly if Drouin doesn't pan out). If they sent down Olofsson or Meyers they could afford Kubalik for a pick/prospect deal maybe but that swallows up the cap they have left and still leaves them needing a little more depth on D. Personally I think the other team in Ontario that needs to move cap probably has the two pieces that would fit best for the Avs (Lafferty & Timmins), and both could be acquired for roughly the same cap space as Kubalik if Olofsson or Meyers were sent down, and without sacrificing LOC.

What if I included Lassi Thomson in exchange for a 3rd?

As an OTT fan I'd love this deal, and the AVS do need to add an offensive contributor, but they no longer have Rodrigues, so LOC becomes too valuable a defensive/PK piece. But man... that would be a move I'd be happy to see Ottawa pull off... HUGE boost to our PK (which I'm quite worried about if Joseph is the one they move.)

Yeah but if they make the move in this ACGM it means they have kept Joseph. Can't see Ottawa moving both Joseph and Kubalik now

I think the Avs would have to be interested if they can make the cap work BUT there is also the issue of LOC being one of our few PK pieces which as others have mentioned has value in itself that neither player coming in replaces. I just think LOC would be the wrong target unless the Avs made other moves.

Agreed. I just meant adding LOC to our PK while NOT losing Joseph would be great. Especially since Motte and Watson are also gone.
Ottawa was short-handed 296 times last season, 2nd highest in the league. (This is a DJ smith thing IMO. Haven't been among the most penalized teams since Paul Mclean)
Last season Ottawa had its 2nd most successful PK in 8 years at 80.1%.
Leading PK fwds (TOI/SH per game): Motte, Joseph, Kelly, Gambrell, Watson.
From that list only Joseph (and maybe Kelly but I doubt it) will be in the line up.
Our best PK in 8 years was 21-22 at 80.3%
Leading PK fwds that season: C Brown, Nick Paul, Formenton, Joseph, Watson.
If this team continues to take penalties like have under DJ, they'd better make damn sure they have the players they need kill 'em.

Agreed, this proposed deal is perfect. Helps our PK, creates enough cap space for Pinto etc

With Tarasenko signing, Kubalik is not that needed anymore. We already have 5 guys who could be over PPG or close, plus Tarasenko, Greig and Pinto. And Joseph might actually surprise offensively this season depending on his role. He just burned a 3v3 league this summer with several NHLers. Scored 25 goals in 7 games. Comtois, Drouin, Perron, Letang, etc were playing

It’s 3v3 though but yeah quite a lot more than anyone else. He was the superstar apparently

Here's hoping OTT finds a way to keep him and he explodes on our third line for a career year. So tired of every post moving him for a second getting replied to with "It would take a 1st and a prospect!" "We're not taking your cap dump for less than blah blah blah"

It gets annoying fast.

I don't know if you have seen this before but this is why I think trading Kubalik is a no brainer :

- Kubalik is UFA after the season. Sens won't have the cap space to re-sign him as they really need to focus on signing a better forward than him or even Tarasenko. He would walk for nothing while we could get an asset for him NOW. Joseph will COST an asset to move now and will most likely restore positive value this season and particularly with the cap going up next season

- Kubalik scored 17 of his 45 pts on the PP last season. There's TEN (10) other guys who require and need PP time before him, and that's not even counting Greig and Brannstrom.

- Over the last 2 seasons, Total Points per 60 minutes at 5v5, Joseph 1.46 and Kubalik 1.37

- Joseph is our best PK forward (history of posting Elite K metrics). He's also one of our fastest skaters and one of our best forwards defensively at ES. Kubalik wouldn't come close to any of that.

I agree with ALL OF THAT, but worry that any team interested in Kubalik would sooner just sign Tatar and not give up an asset. And yet, Tatar remains an available UFA...

We don't know what is going on with Tatar but even if one team signs him, another team will look up for depth. Yes the cap is tight for most but you can still bury a player in the AHL or carry less players on your roster to free enough space, etc.

Season is starting soon so things will get clearer soon
