Three Guys Leafs Should Trade Before The Season

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2023
Published: Aug. 31, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jarnkrok - No space in top six for him, not physical enough for third line role, no shows in the playoffs.

Nylander - Asking too much, and can't afford to lose him for nothing in free agency next year. Leafs cup window is 5 years, not 1, so it's a mistake to keep Nylander for one more run when he could be flipped for picks and younger players.

Brodie - He was awful in the playoffs, not physical, and highly overrated by Leafs fans.

The rental market for wingers is not great. Keep nylander and try to sign him.

Brodie catches a lot of flak as the Toronto D-man whipping boy, but he is the best defensive d-man on the leafs, despite being slightly overpaid. Unless you're comfortable winning a lot of games 5-4, moving Brodie hurts the team.

Jarnkrok - No space in top six for him, not physical enough for third line role, no shows in the playoffs.

And you want the Pens top 2 prospect for him?

I'm not a fan of trading Calle Jarnkrok, but if you can get Pittsburgh's best defensive prospect for a guy who isn't physical enough for a third-line role and doesn't show up in the playoffs, then, sure.

Fat chance.

Defense is worse.
Top 6 is worse.
Bottom 6 is marginal improvement.

These draft picks don't help the current team/window.

This team is significantly worse and not a legit cup contender.

Leafs do not trade Nylander unless it's for another elite roster player that can slot right into the top line or top pair.

Stanley cup teams win with draft picks. Tampa traded Miller for a 1st and flipped it for Coleman. Colorado traded Duchene for a 1st which became Byram.

Terrible trade for Brodie, doesn't help the cap much. Preds don't give up all that for Nylander, and the usual impractical, totally ridicoulous "extension attached" caveot.
Absolute nonsense, team trade upcoming UFAs just so they can get something for them.
Last summer their were 246 upcoming UFAs (yes some were minor leaguers)......they didn't get traded.

Both those teams also didn't trade their best playoff performers for those picks.

It's simple, cup winners traded their like 10th best guy for over payments, then traded some of those picks for cheaper 10th best players.
So the leafs should take a beating on a nylander trade and bring in guys who are worse than nylander with those picks!
Win win!

What is that Jarnkrok crock of ****? lol nobody wants to pay for him yet you're getting arguably one of the top LD prospects in the league for him?

It's not like the Sharks got back a haul for Meier. This is a good return for a winger.

Dubas might not see it that way. He doesn't like big defencemen and he's the one who signed Jarnkrok. He might even think he's getting a steal here.

Why would the leafs make a trade based on what a team that has nothing in common with them did?
The sharks were never signing meier, the sharks arnt trying to win the cup and meier was guaranteed 10 million aav if he so desired. There is literally zero comparison for a trade value

Yeah, that guy who brought in muzzin, Lyubushkin, schenn, Bogosian, hutton and benn doesnt like big defencemen.

Bottom pair 7th defencemen don't count. Muzzin is the only exception.

It's the truth.

A championship calbire defence is build at the draft, not acquired on July 5th in the bargain bin. Dubas never learned this basic fact of team building. He took two small Swedish defencemen in back to back drafts, one of which he then traded away, and the other one was benched by his coach in the most important games of the season.

Tampa drafted Cernak, Vegas drafted Roy, that's what good teams and good GMs do. I suspect Treliving will draft a couple of big defencemen next year.

Cernak was a 2nd rounder and Vegas has never ever drafted a player named Roy, do you mean Hague? Because he was on Vegas' bottom pairing when they won the cup sounds about as important as the guys Dubas brought in.
Seriously dude, try making a comparison that actually makes sense next time. I guess you could look to the last few times the leafs drafted a bunch of big defenders eh? Remember Rasanen? Oh wait, does he count as a dubas pick? I mean, you included liljegren so he has to count. Yeah, that guy was real big, and a 2nd rounder like Cernak and Hague! I bet he's a big part of some NHL teams line up.
Or you know, Greenway, Middleton, Mattinen, Nielsen, Desrocher, Valiev, Loov, Nilsson, Granberg. Damn, if only the leafs drafted big defenders ever!
