That Kempe trade is definitely one of the more interesting deals I've seen on here

Without extension in place, no way Buffalo does that. Even with extension might be a little rich, but not aggressively so.

The Pesce trade assumes an agreed extension. I just didn't write it down.

Why would LA do that?

I mean I get the Kempe deal but 40 goals and signed at that cap hit for 3 more years I don't think LA moves that.

My thought behind the Kempe for Necas idea was that everybody simultaneously gets something and gives up something. LA gets cap space for a big goalie add (potentially Hellebuyck) and an extra season of team control, but also loses some goal-scoring. Canes lose a season of team control (Necas has 3 RFA seasons remaining before age 27) but gains a 40 goal scorer at a good cap hit. The goal-scorer premium means that the Canes give up the 1st.

The Kings aren't trading their first 40 goal scorer in 30 years.

What? Am I missing something? Necas just had a better season in terms of production than Kempe did and is 2 years younger... Necas can play center... that's a rather large price to get like 14 more goals. Kempe is one of the few players in the league with speed that can match Necas, but even still, this makes 0 sense for Carolina. 2.5 million in cap space for 14 more goals just doesn't make sense. The entire point would be to add someone in addition to what the Canes have, not swap for what the Canes have.

And this RD is not good enough. DeAngelo in the top 4 should be a crime, relying on a 39 year old Brent Burns to be your premier RD is a major risk.

My original trade idea also swapped Chatfield + PHI 2024 2nd for Matt Roy, but for simplicity's sake, I kept it as Kempe for Necas+1st as the point of discussion. My original idea had the following defensive pairs:

Slavin-Burns
Orlov-Roy
Skjei-DeAngelo

Arvidsson would be traded for cap space not Kempe.

That makes more sense. I don't get what Roy would do though because he's literally LA Pesce. Same age, same contract issues.

Necas for Kempe doesn't make enough sense. We need production. Kempe's goals are nice, but I'd rather have the younger player with the better point production

Actually, Arvidsson would be a great fit for the Canes style of play, too; it's just that the role that Kempe would fill (elite goal-scorer) is the single biggest need that Carolina has.

I think that Roy is the easier re-signing for Carolina. He likely will not command a 7-8 year contract on the open market in the same way that Pesce will.

Pesce's also significantly better is the issue. Make no mistake, Pesce's skillset makes him a complete unicorn. Roy is very good, but still asking him to replace Pesce is a mammoth task

Problem with that is Pesce will want more years than the Sabres would wanna give him
