I dont understand the Domi move

Description
Little backstory of my thoughts:
Kampf’s most successful shutdown line was Engvall and Mikheyev, then it went to Engvall and Kerfoot, then Jarnkrok/Kerfoot and Lafferty, and as this is has declined so has Kampf’s play. Now there’s an opportunity for Jarnkrok and Lafferty again. However since Bertuzzi is glued to the 1st line for now, there’s a decision between Domi and Knies for 2LW, then it falls off to the 4th line spots for whoever’s left. But that won’t work so maybe it’s one of Domi or Knies to play on the shutdown line with Kampf? Don’t know how well Domi and Knies will fare playing almost all defensive zone starts.

Or Domi can play 3C, Knies in the top 6, maybe we can bring Robertson on Domi’s LW, but that pushes Kampf to the 4th line with Reaves. Do you want Reaves on your shutdown line being hemmed in his own zone against the other team’a superstars? Or we put Reaves on the Domi line to act as a power forward and they shelter this line in the offensive zone? Doesn’t make sense to me. What do you guys think?

Also we don’t have enough space for Lafferty unless we go 20 man roster. Timmons has to be sent down no matter what unless we perma 11 and 7ing it which I’ve never heard of

Domi was a bad signing. I wouldn't be surprised if he's traded early

I agree, there is a logjam in the top 6 and an identity crisis in the bottom six. I guess they expect Kampf to produce more offensively? That would be a mistake because it's clear he is a defensive specialist. Neither Knies nor Domi will fit in well on a line with Kampf, and the presence of Reaves on the 4th line negates that line from being an effective shutdown line.

I don't think Treliving and Keefe were on the same page at the start of free agency.

The only way I could see it working is with a Nylander trade that brings in a top 2 defenceman, which means there is room for both Knies and Domi in the top six.

Using Domi with Robertson and Reaves would certainly be a disaster.
Domi on LW with Kampf and Jarnkrok makes better sense. They can cover him on the defensive end of the game and Domi can provide some scoring and grit. Even just swapping Reaves and Jarnkrok only would be an improvement.
Timmins has too much potential to just let go, especially with Giordano turning 40 and being on retirement watch.

Right we're all kind of on the same page here. I agree that Domi would probably fit best on the 3rd line but did he sign here knowing he'd be on the line that this team purely depends on for shut down duty. Like other teams have multiple lines like their 2nd and 3rd lines can go against tougher comp and defensive zone draws but there's a reason kampf got paid the way he did. Similarly Timmins played well here. It looks like the signings were made in the mind that Nylander would've been traded by now and it's kind of weird cause he's still here. Same with the defense they added another liability in Klingberg and McCabe-Brodie already look exhausted by the end of the season with the match ups last season. I feel like they were trying to bring in a defensive defensemen for Nylander but now it's like we're running this weird confusing team.

Plus with the possible cap relief from the trade Reaves could be scratched but now he has to play cause we can't afford to replace him in the lineup

Everything feels a little off. That's likely what happens when you have a new GM. Nonetheless, the Leafs' number one issue in the playoffs year-to-year is their depth scoring. The addition of Domi in the top 9 helps that dramatically. And I think he could actually be a very good fit next to Kampf. Kampf's offensive abilities seem to thrive when he plays with guys who are elite in transition. Domi is one of the best players at creating chances off the rush in the NHL. Having said that, I think penciling him into the 3rd line pretty much eliminates any possibility of that being a "shutdown line". But knowing Keefe, he'll probably juggle lines a lot within the game depending on the scenario (defensive draws). It's definitely a little difficult to see right now, but I can promise you it'll make a lot of sense when the season starts.

I can also say with certainty that these moves were NOT made in anticipation of Nylander being traded. If it was, then there would be a MASSIVE hole in our offence. It also doesn't really make sense to sign Klingberg if that was the case, too. All sign point towards an extension, which will get done eventually.

I don’t understand how options are a bad thing, $3M one year deal for a guy that can put up 60-70 points is a steal. Kampf has centred a 3rd line that was good defensively but offered little to no offense. Can’t just rely on two lines anymore, especially in playoffs.
We’ll see how the D shakes out; imagine it’ll look different come playoff time. Also think it’s fair to wait and see how they perform before declaring doomsday; we were a top 10 team defensively last year and imo - we are better team at start of 2023 compared to 2022.

I don't know why you think Domi plays centre. Holmberg has shown he is capable.
If Leafs go with just even forwards. It might be Bertuzzi, Domi and Knies, jut three on the left side. Jarnkrok can go back on forth to LW and RW
Benoit isn't a capable NHLer. Don't see how the Leafs could risk losing Timmins, Gotta think he stays a Leaf .

Yea depends how Keefe mixes the lines up during games. They’ve got enough weapons to be a really good team I’m just concerned cause the Tavares line is already sheltered then whatever line Reaves is one would be too and we want to limit Matthews on hard match ups

Uhhh yea Bertuzzi > Bunting, Domi/Knies > Kerfoot/ Jarnkrok is Domi a better transition winger than Engvall? Engvall had good chemistry with Kampf, Samsonov is the starter no Murray assurance, Klingberg > Sandin offensively, but Lijlegren fell off a freaking cliff like unplayable in the 2nd half of last season now he’s got no one else. And Holl played the most PK minutes on the team last season so now that’s going to fall on Brodie and McCabe so how’ll that work energy wise

Holmberg did play well at 4C but it was a disaster in the one game he played 3C he was like -2 with a couple penalties then he got sent down a little afterwards. If they want him instead of Robertson or Gregor they can afford it. The thing about Timmons is that team can’t afford him they’d only have 11 forwards. Can you do emergency call ups if there’s no new injury like are they calling up guys on behalf of Murray at that point?

You’re actually on here defending Engvall & Holl 🤯? Wondering if you’re actually a Leafs fan because - nothing personal against them - they were horrible.
Team is much better at start of this year imo, but as always - only thing that matters is playoffs and lots of time to figure that out

I mean they did their jobs. Unless Keefe is a loon he basically threw Holl to the wolves cause one he was somewhat capable but two Brodie can’t handle it with the minutes he plays I guess. And Kampf wasn’t the dependable shutdown guy after Engvall left. They quickly patched it with O’Rielly but he’s not here anymore so I’m just concerned about what it would look like now when the teams cap strapped and no other options

Listen, everyone entitled to their opinions but I couldn’t disagree more. Engvall was effective - nothing happened offensively or defensively when he was on the ice; maybe that’s valuable but I prefer players who can impact the game. Holl crunched minutes - admittedly tough minutes - but by his metrics, and by eye test for anyone who watched games, especially playoffs, he was abysmal.
Is this team perfect - no (no such thing in flat cap world ) but we are better team on paper to start last year (& we finished top 5) + there is lots of time to figure things out before playoffs. Guaranteed that roster will be different by then

Leafs have AHL forwards that can be called up and down without going through waivers. But the Leafs have just six competent NHL Dmen, Timmins could be the seventh. If he was claimed on waivers the Leafs have NO....NONE other NHL capable Dmen wit the Marlies. Benoit isn't one, and the look at the other Marlie Dmen....no one is NHL capable.

Domi works bc he can bump Kampf down to 4C and have a Holmberg - Kampf - Reaves combo which has worked with Kampf in the past (having the rookie and a big tough guy to protect him)...

If needed Laff can control the 3rd line to get him started with Domi and Jarnkrok as a Jarn - Domi - Laff paring on the 3rd line... Move Knies up to LW 1 for Knies - Matthews - Marner and Bert - JT - Nylander and you're all set... OR, if you want to run an 11/7 and have Holmberg go down... Kampf and Reaves become extras to play matchups...

It all works out, trust the process
