This was the signing I didnt like

Created by: RipNasty
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 14, 2023
Published: Sep. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Domi is terrible defensively, isn't physical and only scores with top level linemates. I would rather Bertuzzi and Knies play in the top 6. Having Domi in the bottom 6 makes us way easier to play against because he's terrible defensively and his offense won't benefit the team in the bottom 6. Shouldn't have signed him.

The team would have better situation to accrue space and add at the deadline.

You say these things about domi but then have klingberg on the top pair.

I didn't notice lol

I actually support the Klingberg signing. Yeah he'll have his moments but he really is tailor made for how Keefe wants the defence to play. I firmly believe they need to add to the defence as well but he'll be good in TO.

I hope so at least. He does elevate his game in the playoffs though.

I think Domi will shine considering his ratty play style and his desire to play in TO

Domi was catastrophically bad defensively last season. Klingberg has been out of his element for a few seasons but is tailor made for how Keefe plays. One of the two will succeed and I don't think Domi's style will jive with Keefe.

Having a desire to play in TO doesn't mean he will all of a sudden figure out how to play defence at his age. He is what he is and that's an empty calorie scorer who sucks defensively

Kampf was a bit much but fine. He has value. Samsonov is good, one year to prove it or lose it Woll. Klingberg will be a huge win by the end. Domi I don't like at all and I am happy that Bertuzzi is just one year term.

He is in his prime, and the last time he played for an O6 team, he had 72 points in 82 games… And I think Keefe should be able to help him be competently defensively

Only reason I dislike the Samsonov deal is because the should’ve signed him for longer. The free agency goaltending class always sucks , you can’t afford to risk losing him

Domi's best season were when he was able to play center, I'd rather have him play 2C and push Tavares to the wing and playing Nylander with them. It'll be a tire fire defensively but if sheltered could be a useful glass cannon option for the leafs

I think you’re being a bit harsh on Domi; he is one dimensional but offense is most important part of game. I saw a stat where his passing in ozone leading to scoring chances is high, high end. And maybe he (with Klingberg) could help PP2 become a legit threat. Having options is good - seems to me like he could play with Marner & Matthews (two defensively strong forwards)

Domi had 13 points — all at even-strength — in 19 playoff games. That included 10 assists; only Jack Eichel (15) and Mark Stone (11) had more at even-strength this past post-season. Domi completed 1.39 slot passes per 20 minutes, which led the Stars and was tied for 16th out of 95 forwards who played at least 100 minutes at 5-on-5 during the playoffs. (In the regular season, Domi’s 1.44 slot-pass completions per 20 ranked 69th out of 503 qualified forwards.)

Domi also has slick hands and the skating ability to attack off the rush. His 3.84 open-ice dekes per 20 were 10th among qualified forwards, and his 4.25 offensive-zone carry-ins were 11th.

Pretty sure you cannot accrue cap space while having players on LTIR. Under your proposal here, I think the best you could do at any point in the season is pick up a minimum salary player (assuming no cap going out and nothing else changes with this roster).

He's also catastrophically bad defensively. And that isn't a small sample size. It's his entire career

I’ll take offensive talent over defensive any and every day. Not saying defensive play isn’t important but hardest thing to do is generate offense, especially during playoffs. Domi has proven he can do it and put him beside great players 👍💪. Just balance out his line with better defensive players. Nylander is not great defensively either but we look past it because of his elite offensive play. Domi is similar, albeit not as good. I like the signing

How is anyone against the Domi signing?? He had bad defensive numbers in Chicago? He flourishes in the big cities and the big games. Had his best year in Montreal and played great for Dal in the playoffs. He will exceed his 3M in what he brings. We finally have someone that will stick up for his teammates along with Bertuzzi. That alone is a huge asset. He brings what the Leafs need and will bring secondary scoring while doing so.

Leafs do that but PP2 will get time and needs to be a threat. Also injuries, etc.

They couldn’t have… Arb signings are max 2 years but more likely 1 year deals
