Colorado is not going to give up Byram for Nylander. They are also probably comfortable with the options that they have for their top 6.

On the flip side, Byram is not what the Leafs need.

Agreed on your first point.

On your second: why? Imo, the Leafs have a stacked top 6 and a serviceable top 4 D. Adding in a 22 year old guy who can be a cheap value contract and play big minutes is exactly what they need.

Leafs ACGMs should have this quote on repeat in their minds.

I would say the Leafs don't do this for the same reason that Colorado doesn't just trade away D Toews. Byram still has a lot of growing to do though, maybe he makes a huge jump this year but I don't think that would be in Toronto.

As of npw though, in terms of playing big minutes, offensively he would be behind Rielly and Klingberg which isn't an issue, and defensively he'll be behind Brodie for sure. If he's able to play the second most defensive minutes and make a positive impact then that's exactly what they need but considering his age and health that's far from a sure thing. So going from a stacked top 6 to a good one might not be worth it in the short-term. The low cap hit for the next two years could br great but only if scoring doesn't become an issue.

I think it would make more sense for the Leafs to get Toews if they are willing to sacrifice some offense from the forward. Byram would be a good choice only if they are dialing back expectations a bit for the next couple of years. I don't think that would be wise though with other Atlantic teams on the rise.

Edit: Maybe if Patrick Kane becomes an option with Nylander gone then it would be worth it. What the Leafs need though imo is a RHD that can pair with Rielly that allows Brodie to play with Klingberg or McCabe as needed. Maybe that could be Liljegren if he grows or a defensive d who will cost a whole lot less than Byram.

And this is why a Nylander trade just isn't happening. The value of return that the leafs would want for him isn't out there. No one is right or wrong, it just isn't happening.

This is what Leafs fans want. The actual Leafs org would be really happy to get Byram. And even amongst Leafs fans, Byram and multiple firsts is an extreme outlier.

Let's say the Stone trade to Vegas is a decent comparable. Ottawa got Brannstrom, Lindberg, and a second.

First, Stone is better than Nylander, but close enough. Second, Byram is better than Brannstrom. Yes Brannstrom was considered a top prospect at the time, but he also hadn't proven a thing in the NHL. Byram has more value.

Bottom line, I can at least see the justification to ask for Byram. Leafs won't get him, but it's not totally insane to ask. But to add multiple firsts on top is just silly.

Except they’re 2 1sts short so no it doesn’t happen and the leafs aren’t trading a top ten RW for maybe a top 50 defender when the only sweetener is a 3rd this is ridiculous

As it always has been, the entire issue here is whether he signs a new contract with the team he is traded to and whether that team is comfortable having his cap hit on their books for that amount of time. If this is a sign and trade, I could definitely see the value you are proposing being a possibility. I would argue a 1st and 3rd plus Byram should equal Nylander, but we would be in the ballpark.

Obviously an extension is in place and I stand firm that it should be 2 firsts they can take back they’re 3rd that’s fine but regardless we aren’t trading nylander for a defender

I hear ya. The difference between those comparisons is that Byram is NHL ready now. Barring additional injury setbacks, his floor is top 4 D and his ceiling is a true top pairing guy, maybe even a #1. Meanwhile if you move Toews or Nylander for futures, those assets won’t help you until Tavares is off the books.

Don't disagree with that either. If you're losing that firepower from your top 6 you should get something back that can at least partially fill the hole.

Definitely don't think the Leafs should be moving Nylander for futures, but I guess technically they could if they are also getting back one or two serviceable roster players that fill a need. I'm guessing that's what is meant by Toronto looking for an Eichel type return for Nylander as opposed to trading him for a rental. Thst type of trade isn't available for them at this time though, and unless a trade happens in the first half of the year, he's just going to fetch a typical rental winger package at which thry would just opt to rent him themselves.

Personally, I think they are better off trying to find a middle ground and signing him at 9-9.75M.
